Felon wants job as Cosmetologist

Can felons get jobs that require licenses?

Felon Job
I am an LPN and have first offender charges of prescription fraud (doctor shopping) on my record. Due to injuries sustained in an auto accident and medications needed and prescribed by my neurologist, I can no longer practice as a nurse. I have undergone extensive counseling and am still paying fines. I wanted to contest the charges due to my medical records supporting my prescriptions. I instead was advised to take these charges to avoid another more severe charge. My question is, can my charges on my record affect my application and testing to be a licensed cosmetologist? I want to be a productive citizen of society and support my son and myself. I want to try something else and I think I can and will enjoy this field but want to know these things before I invest the money in training.

I would suggest that you contact the Cosmetology Licensing Board in your state. They will be able to tell you if you are eligible.

Felon in Florida looks to expungement to get jobs

Can expungement help ex-offenders and felons get jobs?

expungement
I was convicted in the state of Florida for 5 counts of fraud I did my probation 2.5 (was given 5) paid restitution and now looking for work why is is that when an employer does a background check on me the status says active? Next I am in the process of trying to get this sealed/expunged. When that is settled will I be able to get a security license so I can work as a security guard or how about my RN license as I am currently in school working on that, am I wasting my time?
Thanks

Unfortunately many people believe that sealing or expungement of records will erase their criminal records. In most cases and in most states, expungement means that their convictions will invisible to the public. The will always be visible to law enforcement, the court system and government agencies. Since most licensing is done through state agencies, expungement will not help them.

Many ex-offenders and felons looking for jobs seek legal counsel before the can start an effect job search just to see how their records will impact their ability to get jobs. I suggest contacting your local legal aid office to see just how viable an option expungement is for you. Next I would contact the agencies that issue the licenses you want to see if you are eligible.

I hope this helps.

Felon wants a Military Career

Military may be an option for ex-offenders and felons looking for jobs

felons
Hello I hope you can help......

Well I was charged with failure to stop after having an accident involving personal injury and I'm a little misunderstanding of what it means for it being a class four felony. I want to get into the military cuz lets face it at this point in time the chances of me getting a decent job to support me and family is really really low with this charge on me. I don't see any other options cuz from wut I have been gathering with web browsing you can't get certain certificates and degrees to work and money is not real good at the moment to just lolly gag so my questions are as follows

1. Can I get it expunged?

2. Is it a felony misdemeanor

3. How would I go about tryin to get in the military with this?

4. What states would this not count as a felony....... and I'm sorry if its a lot or jus very scrambled. I want the best for my child and wife so I'm a little everywhere with this but I'm looking forward to this response thank you.

Ernesto

Hello Ernesto,

Felon Military
Questions 1, 2 and 4 are best answered by an attorney. Often ex-offenders and felons looking for jobs need legal assistance. I suggest contacting your local legal aid office. There you will probably be able to get low-cost or low-cost legal advice. They may be also be able to answer questions about ex-offenders and felons getting professional certifications.

Felon Military
Just a note on expungement, it is not an option in every state.  Even in states which allow them, often they are limited.  For example, in New Jersey, where I am, one is allowed only one felony expungement.  It cannot even be applied for until ten years after the termination of the sentence.  Expungement is not a cure all.  Even if one is granted, the conviction will always be visible to the court system, government agencies and law enforcement.

Felon Military
Don't give up on a military career. The military often accepts ex-offenders and felons and there are many career options. Your best option is the Army. The Army seems to be the most liberal as it relates to accepting ex-offenders and felons. Contact you local Army recruiter to inquire about your eligibility.

I hope this helps.

Felon in Atlanta needs help finding Jobs

A felon can get help finding jobs and careers

My husband just relocated here to Atlanta to be with his family. He is a convicted felon. It has been hard for him to find a job for many reasons. For one, I work two jobs to support us and he stays home with our two youngest children (we have 5) during the day. Secondly, we do not know a lot of people here in Atlanta,GA to network with. And of course....its hard to get a job period, add a felony to it and it is even harder!

We are searching for possible job search programs that will help us get childcare and help him be able to look for employment. I am on waiting list for assistance for childcare but I have been waiting for months. We can not afford childcare without him working. It is only by Gods grace that we have made it this far. Any advice or suggestions would be great!!!!

Thanks

Ex-offenders and felons looking for jobs should know what is in their records

There is help for ex-offenders and felons looking for jobs

Ex-offender jobs
Which reputable company can I go to online or the most popular or common to do a background check on myself. I want to be able to know exactly what's on my record so I'll know what to put on my application when filling them out.

Thanks

That's a very good question.

I encourage all ex-offenders and felons looking for jobs to find out exactly what is in their respective criminal records. This will allow them to be honest when applying for jobs.

Ex-offender Jobs
An employer may perform a background check through an investigative service or state or federal law enforcement agencies. The law allows public access to felony conviction records without consent of the person whose record is being checked. Local law enforcement agencies may provide this information for a fee.

The best and most accurate resource for criminal records is from the Federal Bureau of Investigations (The FBI)

Individuals can obtain a copy of their national criminal history record from the FBI by submitting a request to the address below.

In order to receive a copy of your FBI record for personal, employment, or international work requirements the FBI requires the following:

1) A signed written request with a brief explanation for the request and your complete return
mailing address.

2) Every request for records must contain two completed applicant fingerprint cards with all of the applicant's personal information (name, date of birth, place of birth, etc.) and a current set of 10 rolled fingerprints and eight flat finger impressions. Fingerprints and impressions must be taken by a local police department.

3) An $18.00 fee in U.S. currency by certified check or money order payable to the United States Treasury. This information is provided in compliance with the U.S. Freedom of Information Act.

FBI
CJIS Division
ATTN: SCU, MOD.D-2
1000 Custer Hollow Road
Clarksburg, West Virginia 26303
For more information, you may contact the FBI at 304-625-3878

An easier way to get an accurate copy of your criminal record is from your probation or parole officer. He/she can get it without a fee.

I hope this helps.

Felon with old conviction needs a job

My name is Anthony, and I’m currently 49 years old. I am having severe difficulties obtaining employment due to a crime (convicted of Attempted Robbery 1) I committed when I was 16. I was convicted at 18, and served 3 years in the N.Y. penal system. I’ve worked as a machinist for over 25 years, and since 2005, in industrial sales. I was just on a 2 1/2 hour job interview today, which looked extremely promising – until I was asked if I had ever been convicted of a crime. I was informed 40 min. ago that I would not be considered due to this. What are the costs? I will pay whatever is necessary to have this sealed and get my life on track.

Why, 31 years later, is this haunting me now more than ever? Thanks,

Anthony

Your difficulty finding jobs may be more a symptom of the present economy rather that you being a felon. Ex-offenders and felons looking for jobs are particularly hit hard by this tough job market.

Felon Job
As far as sealing your conviction, you may have to seek legal assistance to see if this is a viable option in your state. May I suggest your local legal aid office. There you will find low-cost or even no-cost assistance as well as advice on you options in your state, Check you local telephone directory for the nearest legal aid office.  Bear in mind that sealing your record does have its limitations.  It will always be visible to the court system, law enforcement and government agencies.

Felon JobNext, I suggest to all ex-offenders and felons looking for jobs to visit their local One-stop Career center. One-stop Career Centers are underutilized resources that can provide a wide array of services that you help you find a job or start a new career.

You can find your nearest One-stop Career Center here:

Can a Convicted Felon get a Job as a Nurse?

Felon wants job as a nurse

Felon
I am a convicted felon with a civil rights violation. (I used to be a police officer) I have not been able to find a job and I am assuming it is because of my felony. I am planning on going back to school and wanted to become a registered nurse. I have heard conflicting info about a felon getting a nursing license. I have been told by two states board of nursing that I would have to graduate from nursing school before they would hear my case. That doesn't make any sense to me. Why would I want to pay my way through nursing school if there was a chance I couldn't get a license? I need to find out what type of licenses a felon can successfully obtain and what companies hire felons in the mean time. Any information will be helpful.

Thank You,

Jenn

Hello Jenn,

I'm sorry you are having so much trouble getting definitive information. The certification processes will vary from state to state. A felon may be eligible in one state and not another. Many states have on-line overviews of licensing procedures as they relate to various professions.

My next suggestion is to get some legal assistance in finding out about the licensing of felons in your state. You may be able to get low-cost or even no cost assistance at you local legal aid office.

I have posted a video on Youtube that list of companies that have been known to hire ex-offenders and felons.

Felons may use expungement to get jobs

Felons may use expungement to get jobs

expungement
Hi,

I am seeking help! I am currently a Private Investigator and have been for two years. I was a corrections officer for ten years, and I have my associates degree in criminal justice. However, I ran into a problem and I am being charged with embezzlement and I am going to be a convicted of a felony. I'm pretty sure I'm going to get probation but don't know yet. I am subject to re-certification to be a private investigator and I know they are going to see this felony in my record now. I need help trying to find a new job, however as you can see my life has revolved around law enforcement what or where can I find a job?

K

Hello K,

You may not get convicted. If you are, you may have a professional career even with a felony. Because you have practical experience, you may consider teaching criminal justice at a community college or a private business or career school. They are all over because the criminal justice field is growing. Just watch daytime TV and you'll see what I mean.

expungement
There is the chance that you will be convicted. Then your options will change.  There is a chance that your conviction will impact your ability to be re-certified.  If that is the case, you may look into having your conviction sealed or even expunged. Many ex-offenders and felons looking for jobs require a little legal assistance and expungement may be an option. The statutes regarding expungement or sealing of records vary from state to state so you should seek legal advice. Since expungement is a legal procedure, I would not encourage you to try it by yourself.  This is better done by a qualified legal professional that has knowledge of how they are done.  I suggest you get some advice from you local legal aid office. You may be eligible for no-cost or low-cost legal assistance.

I hope this helps

Felon feels background checks are unfair

Ex-offenders and felons looking for jobs should know what is in their records

Felon Background checks
Hi Eric,

Thanks for allowing this email, and starting your blog. Although I do not know your credentials, or where you get your knowledge, just knowing there is an open discourse is helpful to those of us who feel desperate.

I am an ex offender who was convicted in 1977, and 1978 for 2 separate offenses. 1977 robbery- this was a teenage indiscretion of joyriding in a stolen car with someone who lifted a set of keys from a key hook on the wall in a home where we attended a party and then, staying silent after we were caught. The robbery charge is because the keys were stolen from inside the home, making it a point of law 1978 for possession of a controlled substance. The reason I give that summary is to articulate the injustice of this practice of culling ex-offenders from the workforce. Particularly someone who has not been in trouble for over 33 years. Especially when, for decades, I have been employed successfully. In fact, I have a B.A. and an Associates in Applied Science degree- both with honors. I am currently unemployed, and unable to get past the background requirements for employment, and have been eliminated from numerous jobs that I would otherwise have gotten.

 My question's are these:

1.) How is it not a violation of our constitutional rights for a potential employer to data mine our info. without standing? And, have us self incriminate as a pre-employment requirement? Isn't the Constitutional protections for minority rights?

2.) What are the statistics of ex- offenders currently in USA? In other words how many millions of people are affected by this practice? Has this been challenged in the courts?
My belief is that our Constitution is piece of paper that becomes animated by the people who stand up for their own rights. After all, it is the minority that needs the protections, not majority opinion. That is the purpose of the document. Furthermore, without class action, the ACLU will not challenge this practice. How could we mount a class action challenge to this practice? I could go on ad infinitum, but I will just close with a sincere thank you for the work you are doing to help others get through this.

Best Regards,

Felon Background check
Pablo

Hello Pablo,

It is the responsibility of every employer to hire the best person they can find for any job. Having a criminal record does not necessarily eliminate you from consideration from any job. An employer is trying to get some idea of the type of people that are applying.

Too often with ex-offenders and felons looking for jobs assume that they were maligned because because they have criminal convictions. In many cases the may be correct but that is difficult or nearly impossible to prove. I am of African descent. I have often thought that was the reason that I didn't get many jobs that I know I was more than qualified for. Rather that wallow in anger and self-pity, my other choice was to keep applying for each and every job I felt I fit.

When speaking of the laws and the constitution, being a child of the sixties, I can tell you that laws do not change attitudes. Laws may say that I am equal but until individual prejudices go away.

My advice is to not give in to your frustrations but let them motivate you.

I hope this helps.
