Top Five Job Interview Mistakes Ex-offenders and Felons Make

Top Five Job Interview Mistakes Ex-offenders and Felons Make

Top Five Job Interview Mistakes Ex-offenders and Felons make

Ex-offenders and felons,  know how difficult it is to get a job interview.  After properly filling out application after application including the dreaded "Have you ever been convicted of a crime.....?" question and you got an interview.  There are too many people who blow the opportunity to get jobs by making costly mistakes.  Make the most out your next opportunity by avoiding these top five mistakes made by ex-offenders and felons.

1.  Being Late - There is absolutely no excuse for being late to an interview.  To the interviewer, if you are late to the interview, you'll be late for work.  Everyone know that things happen.  Murphy's law is always in effect.  Sometimes thing go wrong.  Being organized is the best way to keep on schedule.  Find out where your interview is and know exactly how long it will take you to get there.  If you have never been there, I strongly suggest you go there a day or so before the interview just to see how long it will take to get there.  Once you know how long it will take, plan to get there at least 15 minutes early.

2.  Dress Inappropriately - An interview is a business meeting.  Does your clothing make you look more like an ex-offender or a businessman?  Proper clothing will be the difference between being hired and not being hired.  Whatever you have to do, get the right clothing.  Remember, you will never get a second chance to make a first impression.

3.  Talking Too Much - Employment interviews should not be used to tell your life story or ramble on about mistakes you have made in the past.  Just remember "TMI," too much information. Too often when folks are nervous, and interviews do make people nervous, they talk too much.  Never talk about personal situations, habits, or relationships.  Be friendly but never tell more than anyone needs to know.  Particularly avoid conversations about religious beliefs, politics, or sex.  If questioned about your convictions, briefly answer questions without going into detail.  Make reference to the amount of time that has gone by and what you have learned from your experience.  Also talk about the progress you have made and the things you have done to make yourself better.

4.  Using Slang or Profanity - As stated before, the interview is a business meeting between two professionals.  You must be professional at all times. There is absolutely no place for slang or profanity here.

5.  Not Turning off Your Cell Phone - Cell phones are a great convenience but they have no place on an interview.  Turning off your phone allows you to focus on your interview and will eliminate the possibility of the rude interruption of  it ringing.

Ex-offenders and felons have a difficult time finding employers who will consider them for jobs.  When interviews do come, avoid ruining these opportunities with these critical mistakes and get hired.

Take a few minutes to get more great information from the videos below that can give you a huge advantage at your next interview.

Wife of felon wants to help him get a job

Wife of felon wants to help him get a job

Wife of felon wants to help him get a job
Hello,

My husband has been released from prison after ten years about 3 months ago. Since than time we're finding it very hard for him to find employment. I mean extremely hard and he has become very depressed. He has gone to target, walmart, meijers, home depot, best buy, Kroger's, McDonald's, kfc, you name it we have filled out applications. He has called them on several occasions to check back about employment. He has two violent felonies and has had many doors slammed in his face. He just feels like giving up. I don't want him to do anything drastic at this point. I really don't know how much more to help him. Is there any advice you can offer us? It would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Concerned Wife

Wife of felon wants to help him get a job

I'm sorry your husband is having so much trouble. Having two violent felonies makes getting a job difficult. It's time for some out-of-the-box thinking.

My suggestion is for him to contact his parole or probation officer. Often they know of employers who hire felons. They also have felons on their caseloads who have gotten jobs. perhaps the officer can point him in the direction of these employers.

Another strategy that often works is to have your husband contact the judge who sentenced him. Judges are influential people with many contacts. He can express to the judge how important getting a job is and his desire to stay on the right side of the law. He should ask the judge for any assistance he can offer. You will be surprised at how effective this will be.

I hope this helps.

Felon needs to know where to look for a job

Felon needs to know where to look for a job

Felon needs to know where to look for a job
Hello,

My boyfriend has a criminal background and he needs a job. I wouldn't say that he's a convicted felon because he never actually got sentenced to do time in a state prison just time in the county prison. We live in New Jersey and I wanted to know where should he start to look for a job.

Felon needs to know where to look for a job

Hello,

I believe you are a bit confused. If he was sentenced to serving time in the county jail, he was convicted. Generally, county sentences are limited to 364 days. Anything longer is served at state prison. He needs to find out if he was convicted of a felony or a misdemeanor. Ask him to take a look at his disposition (release papers.) This is important because he has to know how to answer the "Have you been convicted of a crime?" question. If he was sentenced to do time, pay a fine or probation, the answer is "yes." Knowing how to properly complete employment applications will make the felon job search more successful.

As far as where to look for a job. Take a look at the video below.  It outline several resources a felon can use to get a job.  I always suggest the local One-stop Career Center.  There are many services there that an ex-offender or felon will find useful.

There is also a link below to a list of employers that hire ex-offenders and felons.

Felons Should Try Smaller Companies to get Jobs

Felons Should Try Smaller Companies to get Jobs

Felons Should Try Smaller Companies to get Jobs

From ex-felons to furniture makers

Hello,

I have a criminal record and I can't find a job. I have been filling out applications everywhere. Do you have any advice for someone who has made some mistakes?

I hear this from felons all the time. Please don’t quit. You get nothing when you give up. You may just have to change your strategy. If I am an employer, I probably want to hire someone without a record before I hire someone without one. Most applications will ask about criminal convictions. If you are honest, as I recommend, an employer may not want to hire you.

Felons Should Try Smaller Companies to get JobsA good strategy for finding job openings is to apply to employers directly. Once you have decided on the type of work you would like to do, the next step is to choose employers that could use your services. Felons stand a better chance of being hired by smaller companies rather than larger ones. The owners or managers of smaller companies usually make the hiring decisions. Make a list of employers in your chosen field. Contact each one of them to see if there are positions available and how to apply. The telephone is the best method of contacting employers. You may even get job leads from people you know. Another advantage to applying to small companies is they are less likely to run background checks because they can be expensive.

If you get an interview, make a point to mention the Work Opportunity Tax Credit. To a small business, this may be an incentive to hire a person with a criminal record. The Work Opportunity Tax Credit is offered to employers as an incentive to hire any one of nine targeted groups with barriers to employment, felons included. An employer may receive a credit of as much as $2,400 for hiring a felon. You can find more information here:

Felons Should Try Smaller Companies to get Jobshttp://www.doleta.gov/business/incentives/opptax/

Also remind any prospective employer that you can be bonded by the Federal Bonding Program.  The ability to be bonded will be a big plus.  A felon can be bonded free of charge.  You can get more information on the federal bonding program here:

Can I get a Professional Job with a Criminal Record?

Can I get a Professional Job with a Criminal Record

Can I get a Professional Job with a Criminal Record?

Hello,

I have been trying to get a job with an insurance company or large law firms and no one is calling me back. I assume it is because I was arrested in 2002 and plead out to probation. I am not a convicted felon, but that is still on my record. Also, I have an arrest for battery on my record, but the case got thrown out. Can you really help? I received an email from Allstate that they want to set up an interview with me next week. Will this mess me up once they look up my background?

Mattie

Can I get a Professional Job with a Criminal Record?

Hello Mattie,

Can I get a Professional Job with a Criminal Record?Let's start at the beginning.  You state that you plead to probation, which means that you were convicted.  I don't know what your conviction was for, but if you were convicted of any type of theft, fraud or robbery, some jobs may not be available to you.

In case of any other arrests, employers are more concerned with convictions rather that arrests.  That is why the question on applications typically begin with. "Have you been convicted of a crime..."  I encourage all ex-offenders and felons looking for jobs to get a copy of their criminal records so that they can answer this question honestly and accurately.  The best place to get this is from your probation officer.  I'm sure he/she can get a copy for you.

When your interview comes, as I advise everyone with a criminal record, answer every question honestly, but never volunteer information.  If the question does come up on the interview like this, "I'm glad you are asking this question, because I want you to feel comfortable hiring me....."  Then briefly explain the circumstance surrounding the infraction.  Spend more time talking about the steps you have taken to overcome that situation.

Don't assume that your legal issues are the reason you are getting few call backs.  Continue to apply for every job you qualify for for.  Don't assume that because you have a record, you won't be considered.

I would also try to find out if expungement in your state.  Expungement essentially means that your criminal record would be hidden from public view.  Once that is done, you may claim not to have a record when responding to the "Have you ever been convicted....." question.  Expungement is a legal process that you should not try alone.  You should contact your local legal aid office to see if your state offers the opportunity for expungement.  You may also qualify for free legal services.

Felon wants a Career not Just a Job

Felon wants a Career not Just a Job

Felon wants a Career not Just a Job
Hi,

I am a twenty six year old man who was released from prison in September for a violent felony.  As soon as I was released, I gained employment in a restaurant, I would love to try to find a real career someday, I am starting college again this month, I have thought about becoming a physical therapist, or counselor, I have received advice from many different people, some of which say I would be a great counselor or this or that, but I need to know if it is possible to gain employment in these fields with a felony, I am willing to relocate after I am finished with school, and plan on staying employed at the job I work. Should I continue my pursuit for one of these jobs or just try to find a trade like welding or electrician? Thank you for your help.

Felon wants a Career not Just a Job

First of all, let me say that it is great to see that you are not letting your past dictate your future.  It is easy for a felon to give up without trying.  You have many options and considerations.  Let me start with careers in physical therapy or counseling.  The only consideration is, do either require licensing and would your conviction prevent it.

Having a trade is always an attractive option for ex-offenders and felons.  Who would care about your record if you were good at what you do.  Having a trade, you could work for a contractor or for yourself.

As far as pursuing a professional career, your major concern would be if it require any special license or certification.  If not, I suggest you apply for every job you feel qualified for.  There
Job Success for Felons

are companies that will hire a felon.  Your challenge will be to find them.  Look for the flashing gold bar below.  If you click it, it will take you to a huge list of companies tat hire ex-offenders and felons.  You will also be able to search for open jobs in your local area.  Remember, apply for every job you are qualified for.

There are jobs for felons and you can get hired.  The only way to do this is to not limit yourself and apply just like you didn't have a record.  If the question of your background comes up, be honest but focus on your education and positive qualities.

You also have an idea of what to takes to work in a restaurant, so don't rule out the culinary arts as a career.

If you do pursue a job,  please do not forget The Federal Bonding Program as a useful tool.  Check out the video below.

Remember, never exclude yourself from any opportunity to get a job.

Female Felon Seeks a Job

Female Felon Seeks a Job

Female Felon Seeks a Job
Hi,

My name is Melissa I'm from Philly I do have a criminal record. I got into some trouble when I was 18 years old and was found guilty of aggravated assault, possessing instrument of a crime, simple assault, criminal conspiracy, reckless endangering another person. I was given 11 months jail time.

I thought I needed to better my self because I knew it wasn't gonna be easy trying to find work so I went back to school when I was 26 and got my high school diploma and went to school for cosmetology and completed it also in '07. I'm 28 now single mom of 2 year old twins my question is on my record there are a lot of charges that I wasn't found guilty of and next to them it says nolle prossed.  Is there any way that I can get those removed because it looks really bad with all these charges on there and I think this might be the reason why my luck hasn't been good.

Is there a program out there that has job leads only for ex-offenders if so please put me down.

 Female Felon Seeks a Job

Hello Melissa,
Female Felon Seeks a Job

I'm sorry you are having so much trouble. As I suggest to ex-offenders and felons looking for jobs is to apply to small companies. Surely there are hundreds of small salons in Philadelphia that can use a hard-working person with a cosmetology degree. You may have to be willing to start off at the bottom, perhaps shampooing and cleaning up. It may not be what you want right away but it's a start. Pick up the phone book and start making a list of salons to visit. Have some business cards made up and leave them with salon owners advertising that you will work on an on call basis if there are no permanent positions available.

You may want to the Philadelphia Re-entry Coalition.  There you will find a list of resources that can help ex-offenders and felon.  You can get more information here: https://www.philadelphiareentrycoalition.org

In Pennsylvania, under some circumstances, you may be able to have a criminal record expunged, which means that information is removed from your record.  If you are eligible to have your records expunged, you may petition the court for an order of expungement. I suggest seeking legal assistance from a qualified attorney. You may be able to free or low-cost help at your local legal aid office. You can get more information here:

https://clsphila.org/services/criminal-record-expungement/

I hope this helps

Felon Mom having a Rough Job Search

Felon Mom having a Rough Job Search

Felon Mom having a Rough Job SearchI was looking through the newspaper trying to find something, anything  to support my family. Fifteen years ago I was convicted of a felony. I was twenty years old never been in trouble before and have never been in trouble since then. I didn't spend time in jail but I did do five years probation and was discharged. Now here I am 35 years old no job, no future and a family that is struggling because I can't help. I can’t even get hired at fast food places. I had a great job working for the State through a temporary agency but it was great. I was about to be hired and they did a background check on me. The agency knew about my record and still hired me, but after my background came back I was fired on the spot. Forget that I had been there for 2 years everyday and worked very hard for them. Companies have the chance to hire good workers but they pass us by everyday. Every one makes mistakes, but there are many like me who want to work, and support their families but can't get a break anywhere. My husband works every day and he works very hard to take care of us. I am very proud of him, but he will never understand how I feel. I have been out oft work for over a year now and I am getting depressed. There are things I want for my family and myself but getting a job is the first step. My husband works but his paycheck is not enough to pay all of our bills. We ave a small son and we feel bad because there isn't money for birthday or Christmas gifts or anything that make kids happy.  I had all of those things  I have never begged for a hand out, all I want is a little break so my family won't be so stressed. The stress alone is killing my marriage! My family does not deserve to live like this all because of something I did in my past.  My family deserves better than this.

The world looks at us like once a criminal always a criminal and that's not always the case.  It makes drives me crazy when I see people living off the government.  You got women that keep having babies just to collect more welfare and free government housing.  I have been on the waiting list for for housing for ten years and I have heard nothing!  I see illegal immigrants coming over here that open restaurants, hotels, stores and then you got the ones that come over here and collect welfare for years. Where is the justice when people who were born here can't get anything? My family is forced to live in run down apartments in because we can not afford anything better. We are forced to deal with awful landlords that don’t fix anything but still want their rent  or throw you out.

My hopes of opening up my own business are slowly fading away.  My husband tries to encourage me not to give up but after the year we have had I know it will never happen for me and I promise if it does I won't keep them from a job because of something they did in the past. People can change and I am living proof! I don’t want to think that this is the life God has in store for me but I am starting to wonder, am I going to live the rest of my life like this?

How Female Felons can get Jobs

How Female Felons can get Jobs
Hello Mr. Mayo,

Thank you for reading my email.

I am a 24 year old girl and have a charge of simple assault.  I got into a fight with another girl who pulled a knife on me.  I had no choice but to protect myself but I got a charge anyway.   I have gotten interviews, but when I get to the part about explaining my charge, everything changes and I don't get hired.

I read your blog all the time.  How can people with charges find jobs if no one will give them a chance.  If they can't find jobs then they sell drugs and do other things to get money.  I want to get a job and put this nightmare behind me in the worst way.  Any advice you can give me will be appreciated.

Thank you.

Lori

How Female Felons can get Jobs

Hello Lori,

More and more I am seeing women with felony convictions who are have a hard time finding jobs.  First let me say that ex-offenders and felons get hired everyday all across the country.  You have two challenges.  Firstly, to make yourself as marketable as possible and secondly to find employers who will offer you an opportunity.

First you will need a well written resume.  A resume will quickly help an employer get an understanding of your skills and qualifications.  There are many resources online that can help you get an understanding of how to put a resume together.  If you have never done this before, get help from someone who has written one before.

On most application you will find the question, "Have you ever been convicted of a crime?"  This part is critical.  I encourage everyone I work with to never lie on an application.  In this computer age, lying about criminal records doesn't work so always be honest.   When answering this question, list the name of the conviction, the county you were convicted in, the month and year, and the final outcome.  It might look something like:

Simple Assault (isolated incident), Cook County, IL, 2016 ,  Probation/Fine Paid

When it's time to talk about it, briefly state what happened and how sorry you you are that it happened and how hard you are working to move past it.

Next you will have to practice your interviewing skills.  Find someone who will pose and an interviewer so you can practice answering questions and work on your verbal and non-verbal communication skills.  Practice until you can easily answer questions while sounding sincere.

You will also need professional interview clothes.  The best clothes for an interview is a nice pants or skirt suit with coordinated blouse and shoes.  If you wanted to be looked at as a professional, you must look like a professional.

Finally, check out this list of companies that have hired felons in the past:  Companies that Hire Felons

Bear in mind that these companies will not hire you just because you are a felon, but you may get the opportunity if you are qualified.  Best of luck to you.

Veteran is a Felon Looking for a Job

Veteran is a Felon Looking for a Job

Veteran is a Felon Looking for a JobGood morning,

My name is Irene and I am a veteran and a convicted felon. My thing is that I was in so much trouble in my past until I'm scared to apply for a job thinking I have something outstanding out there. I'm too afraid to go get a back ground check knowing if it's something out standing they will take me in custody. I have a military back ground which consists of administrative work and I'm a certified medical assistant. My criminal background consist of fraud and I've always assumed no one will hire me. I'm 37 years old and I am no longer that person I was back then.

Please if you can, can you give me some advice.

Thanks

Veteran is a Felon Looking for a Job

Hello Irene,

First of all, I teach all of my students to apply for every job they feel that they qualify for.  If you apply for a job, you may get it or you may not.  If you do not apply for it, you definitely will not.  Never disqualify yourself from a job.  Finding a job is a numbers game.  The more jobs you apply for, the more jobs you are in the running for.  Ex-offenders and felons get hired everyday.  The reason they get hired is they don't let the fact that they have criminal records hold them back.

You are a veteran.  There are many services available for veterans looking for jobs.  There are also tax incentives for employers who hire veterans.  Below is the link to the government sit where you will find valuable resources that can help veterans such as yourself.

I hope this helps.

Can a Ex-offender get a job with Pre-trial Intervention?

Can a Ex-offender get a job with Pre-trial Intervention?
If I do pre-trial intervention and then all my record gets sealed once I complete the courses, what do I have to say in an interview when they ask about anything on my criminal record they should know about?

 Can a Ex-offender get a job with Pre-trial Intervention?

Hello Kayla,

Can a Ex-offender get a job with Pre-trial Intervention?
Pre-trial intervention is usually offered to first time offenders whose offenses are not that bad.  In different states it may have different names such as, Deferred Adjudication, Deferred Judgement or Deferred Sentence. There are terms associated with pre-trial intervention, usually a fine and probation.  In most cases when the terms of pre-tral intervention are met, the charges are essentially dropped. Because the charges were dropped, there is no conviction. Record of this can only be seen by the court system, law enforcement and certain government agencies. There will always be a record of the initial charge but it will show as dropped.  With pre-trial intervention, there is an initial plea of guilty. It is my understanding, at the end of the probationary period, if you have complied with all the conditions of probation and the fine is paid, the guilty plea is considered withdrawn, the case is dismissed and no conviction enters. This is because a conviction is not final until there has been both a guilty plea or finding of guilt and the imposition of sentence. Since sentencing does not occur before the end of the probationary term, there is no conviction.  Have you been convicted of a crime?  The answer is "no".  This is not legal advice.  If you want to get the details of your case, contact the probation officer assigned to you.

Many ex-offenders and felons looking for jobs apply for expungement which means that you can apply to have your charge hidden from public view. Both the charge and the pre-trial intervention will always be visible to the court system, law enforcement and government agencies. This may not be an option for you since most employers are only concerned with convictions

I often suggest to ex-offenders and felons looking for a job to seek assistance at their local legal aid office.

I hope this helps.

Hello Eric,

Either you or your employer can apply for the federal bond.
For you to apply, you must have the application form.

You can find it here: Fidelity Bond Certification Form

Take the completed form to your local One-stop Career Center. Ask for the person that handles requests for federal Bonding. That person will be able to explain the bonding process in further detail.

Felons can use Newspaper Want Ads to get Jobs

Felons can use Newspaper Want Ads to get Jobs

Should You Hire Someone

with a Criminal Record?

Many felons turn to the newspaper help-wanted to find jobs. Help wanted ads are a good sources of listings, especial for jobs listed by local employers who don't advertise nationally. Though there are often many jobs listed there, the odds of getting a job this way is against them .

Consider this:

A typical want ad will get between 200 and 500 responses. There will a lot of competition for each job.

Jobs listed in the newspaper account for less than 10% of all available jobs. Some advertised jobs don’t exist. In some cases, the opening may have already been filled but
the company must advertise it because of some requirement.

A job that is constantly advertised may be so bad or pay so poorly that the employer may have trouble keeping employees.

Want ads are not a total waste of your time and energy. There are a few advantages to using the want ads to find a job.

Felons can use Newspaper Want Ads to get JobsJob advertisements are fast. Respond to an ad right away, and you could be hired rather quickly.

For many felons, using the want ads to find openings is less stressful than asking others for help finding a job.

Newspaper want ads easily let you know what the job qualifications are. The qualifications are in the ad so you can tailor your resume, cover letter and interview to what the employer is looking for.
Search  for “entry-level” positions. Entry-level jobs generally don’t pay a lot but they offer the opportunity to work on building an employment history and get valuable experience.

Go through all the ads, not just those in the category for which you're interested. Sometimes job openings will be in a completely different section than where you'd expect. For instance, if you're looking for a job driving a truck, you should look in the "transportation" section.

The odds are against you getting a job this way, but a little hard work will increase your chances of getting a job.

Even though there are many listings in the newspaper, for felons, the want-ads may not be the best choice to find the next job opportunity but it is worth a look.
