Felon Has a Job but wants a Nursing Career

Felon Has a Job but wants a Nursing Career

Felon Has a Job but wants a Nursing Career
Nursing Careers for Felons
Good morning and to whomever it may concern.

My name is Lucien, I'm 40 yrs old and I'm a felon. In the year 2008 I was charge with corporal injury spouse and another person. I sadly walked into a moment of infidelity occurring in my home late night after a long week gone from home over the road truck driving. You can imagine what transpired after. Served 3.5 years, 1.5 yr parole and I obtained a divorce and left California.

I've been trouble free since my release in 2010 and kept working as a truck driver but I'm exhausted of this career. I'm interested in becoming a Nurse but I see and read so many stories of rejection that I become discouraged and continue my miserable unhappy life of truck driving. Websites are just so full of misleading information and discriminatory rejection.

What can I do and how do i go about pursuing the Nurse career In Nebraska and what steps should I take in becoming accepted and certified without the discriminatory rejection I normally encounter?

Please share some ideas, I sincerely appreciate your time and effort in reading this.....

Sincerely,

Lucien

Felon Has a Job but wants a Nursing Career

Hello Lucien,

That's quite a story.  I have students who are truck drivers and I know from them that drive long haul is difficult work.  As far as becoming a nurse,  I would first contact the the medical board in your state to see if you can be licensed with your conviction.

Secondly, if you cannot be licensed as a nurse, but you may be able to be licensed or certified as a Nurses Assistant or Medical Assistant.

Thirdly, if you can get licensed or certified with your conviction you will require training.  There are many career schools out there that train for medical careers.  Before you decide on a career school, ask to see their placement record.  Find out how many of their graduates get placed from every class and where.

I hope this helps.

Can a Convicted Felon get a Job as a Nurse?

Can a Convicted Felon get a Job as a Nurse?
Can a Convicted Felon get a Job as a Nurse?
I am a convicted felon with a civil rights violation. (I used to be a police officer) I have not been able to find a job and I am assuming it is because of my felony. I am planning on going back to school and wanted to become a registered nurse. I have heard conflicting info about a felon getting a nursing license. I have been told by two states board of nursing that I would have to graduate from nursing school before they would hear my case. That doesn't make any sense to me. Why would I want to pay my way through nursing school if there was a chance I couldn't get a license? I need to find out what type of licenses a felon can successfully obtain and what companies hire felons in the mean time. Any information will be helpful.

Thank You,

Jenn

Can a Convicted Felon get a Job as a Nurse?

Hello Jenn,

I'm sorry you are having so much trouble getting definitive information. The certification processes will vary from state to state. A felon may be eligible in one state and not another. Many states have on-line overviews of licensing procedures as they relate to various professions.

My next suggestion is to get some legal assistance in finding out about the licensing of felons in your state. You may be able to get low-cost or even no cost assistance at your local legal aid office.

Felon in AZ wants Jobs in Medical Field

Felon in AZ wants Jobs in Medical Field

Felon in AZ wants Jobs in Medical Field
Hi,

My name is Michael. I was convicted of assault about 12yrs ago. I have struggled finding decent paying jobs. Most employers especially out here in Arizona will not give me a chance. I may have an opportunity to go back to school through a veterans program called VRAP. They pay for you to go to school for a year and give around $1400.00 a month.

My question is this I was thinking about going for a respiratory tech or x ray tech position but I doubt I can get licensed here in AZ. What other careers which require licensing can I do if any and also are they any agencies out in Phoenix that can help me. Thank you for any help you can provide.

Hello Michael,

You assume because of your conviction, you may not be able to be licensed. Why not find out for sure. Just because you are a felon don't assume anything. Here in NJ there are ex-offenders and  felons working in hospitals and doctor's offices.

If I were you, I would contact the Arizona Medical Board to see if you can be licensed.

For Respiratory Technicians contact:

Respiratory Board
1400 W. Washington, Suite 200
Phoenix, AZ 85007 602-542-5995
 http://www.rb.az.gov

For X-ray Technicians contact:

Medical Radiologic Technology Board of Examiners
4814 S. 40th St.
Phoenix, AZ 85040
602-255-4845
http://www.azrra.gov/mrtbe

I encourage every ex-offender and felon I meet, to apply for every job they feel they they are qualified for.  Whichever jobs you apply for, find out what are the requirements.  Do not assume because you are a felon, that you are not eligible.

I also suggest taking a visit to your local One-stop Career Center.  There you will find a number of free services that could help you get a job.  You will also find counselors who can provide information on career options.  Many counselors have experience assisting ex-offenders and felons looking for jobs   You can find the center near you here:

Ex-offender needs help finding a job in the medical field

Jobs that Hire Felons

Ex-offender needs help finding a job in the medical field

Hello,

I live in Florida. I have a worthless check charge which was a felony reduced to a misdemeanor. It doesn't make a difference because I cannot get a job in the nursing field. When they run a background check, they say I'm ineligible to be hired.

Val

Hello Val,

A misdemeanor bad check charge is not the worst charge in the world. First of all are you licensed or can you be licensed in the state of Florida? You can find out here:

http://www.doh.state.fl.us/mqa/

Ex-offender needs help finding a job in the medical fieldSecondly it is possible that the place where you applied has a policy of not hiring ex-offenders or felons? That may simply be the policy of that one organization.

I suggest you contact the school where you were trained and speak to someone in their placement department. They often have contacts that hire their graduates. Often they know the hiring practices of the organizations they work with.  Another suggestion I have for ex-offenders and felons who have medical training, is to apply to temporary employment.  Often permanent jobs are found by those who start as temporary employees.  There are also temporary employment agencies that serve the medical field.

I also suggest going to the One-stop career center in your area. They have counselors who can assist you in finding a job. There will be other services that could be helpful to you such as employment leads from the state job bank, resume writing assistance and other helpful services. Often the counselors are experienced in finding jobs for felons and ex-offenders. You can find your local One-stop career center here:

I hope this helps.
