I relocated to FL in 2004, from PA. I graduated from Eastern University in 2010, then attempted to complete my Masters in Addiction Counseling from Grand Canyon University in 2013, but was prevented by FL State Statute 435.07. I have a 1997 DE felony for 1st degree Burglary. I have not been able to complete school because I can't do my Internship unless/until I get an EXEMPTION from Department of Children and Families. I've lived in FL since 2004, married, no arrests, nothing, but remain barred. I even founded a non-profit tax exempt charitable organization that helps homeless addicts! Still, FL DCF continues to refuse to grant me an exemption. But I claim the victory because the Universe always brings to life what one needs, in one form or another. We all are here to learn and teach others and develop our GOD-likeness to full measure. In the end, the state may regulate (trade & professions), but it absolutely cannot stop what GOD has purposed! AMEN.

I have been working on this issue for awhile now, I just graduated with a BA in Clinical Psychology. I am finding it difficult to obtain employment but I am able to volunteer at the moment and this is hopefully going to provide contacts and allow me to gain experience. Things begin to change when people come together and raise the issue, hopefully together we can all accomplish more than we would ever hope alone.

james 4:12... what state do you live in? just asking. i have a felony on my record and just got married to a man in the military, he wants me to go to school and everything that i've gone through and awesome turning points in my life makes me want to become a licensed counselor. my passion is to help anyone who just might be going through the same things as i did. i hope to God that the battle is not yours and you succeed in what you have started. God is always faithful, where one door shuts another one will open and if that's not happening then ask God to open a window. He moves mountains.

When is society going to start treating convicted felons as people instead of "titles?" I could have sworn I lived in a country that specifies "JUSTICE FOR ALL," a phrase as a child I may have misinterpreted. But as an adult I realize the phrase actually "JUST US" means society believes, there's them and there's us? Currently in school for my LPC in counseling, but have been told, this may not be possible with a felony. Turned down for volunteer positions, internships, and employment; who better to counsel a child or family than someone who has experienced it firsthand? I JUST DON'T GET IT!!! My battle has just begun..

You have an interesting blog. I can appreciate the fact that you are concerned with how we can obtain jobs. Its hard to be part of a society that you supposedly paid your debt to, and they are constantly telling you they don't want you. Not very American is it?
