Federal Bonding Program can help felon get a job

Federal Bonding Program can help felon get a job

Federal Bonding Program can help felon get a job
I was convicted of 2nd degree felony securities fraud in Salt Lake City Utah. My background is in financial services (mortgage lending specifically). My felony conviction obviously limits me greatly as far as my ability to license etc. and provide for myself and my family.

Is there a fidelity bond or some other type of program that I could participate in that would allow me to work in financial services again? A fidelity bond would need to be for a higher dollar amount than the 25k currently offered.

I have contacts at a bank who are willing to consider me if I can provide some sort of fidelity bond to mitigate the risks. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated?

Thank you,

Federal Bonding Program can help felon get a job

I often get questions regarding The Federal Bonding Program and The Work Opportunity Tax Credit.

Federal Bonding Program can help felon get a job
A bond is an insurance policy issued by an agency that protects an employer against money or property loss due to employee dishonesty. Certain convictions make many ex-felons ineligible for private bonding.

The Federal Bonding Program is sponsored by the Department of Labor and issued for those who are unable to be bonded privately. The bond is issued at no cost to the employer and may be an incentive to hire an applicant. Criminal records become less of a concern to employers if they know that they are protected from loss of money or property due to theft. An applicant can be bonded the same day the job offer is made.

You can get more information here:

http://www.bonds4jobs.com

Either you or your employer can apply for the federal bond. For you to apply, you must have the application form. You can find it here:

Fidelity Bond Certification Form

Take the completed form to your local One-stop Career Center. Ask for the person that handles requests for federal bonding. That person will be able to explain the bonding process in further detail.

I hope this helps.

Felon wants a career in health care

Felon wants a career in health care

New law makes it easier for felons to get

Illinois health care licenses

I just stumbled upon your blog and I think its a really great thing you have here. I have some convictions from back when I was a teenager. Three drug charges, which were all at the same time, one of which is a felony. And also I simple larceny charge. I got caught steeling glow sticks at the grocery store when I was 18. All my mistakes I made when I was a teenager haunt my everyday now that I'm an adult. Recently I moved to Florida from Michigan. And I'm finding it very hard to find a job here. I was interested in possibly working in the medical field, however, every time I go to apply for one they seem very strict about having a criminal background.
Felon want a career in health care
I know that anything is possible when I comes to being motivated. Do you think I'm wasting my time with the medical field? Sometimes I feel like I'm getting nowhere. I spent over 300 dollars on a Certified Nursing Assistant prep class and now I'm about to take my CNA test, that is if the state allows me to after they check me out. I'm preparing myself for a big let down even though I feel I've learned a lot and gained much out the experience. If they don't allow me to take the test should I take a different direction other than the medical field? After I quit drugs and everything 6 years ago I went back to school got my diploma and then continued on to college. I felt like I could do anything that I set my mind to. My dream is to be an art teacher. However, I keep getting people telling me I cant do things because of my past. I have even had people tell me not to go to college because I'm wasting my time. What do you think about that? Am I going to be making minimum wage for the rest of my life even if I'm lucky enough to get hired at that?!

Thank you so much for your support and effort into doing this sort of blog and research. It helps to know that I'm not alone and there are other professional people in my same situation.

Jeffrey

Felon wants a career in health care

Hello Jeffrey,

I have worked with ex-offenders and felons who have jobs in the health care field here in the state of New Jersey. I suggest you contact can contact the medical licensing board in Florida. They will be able to advise you of licensing restrictions relating to your conviction. For more information, obtain the Florida Nurse Practice Act and Rules of the Board of Nursing, you can contact them at this number: 850-488-0595

Also don't give your dream of being an art teacher. Too many ex-offenders and felons believe having a criminal record eliminates them from good jobsConsidering your background, you may not be eligible to teach in public schools but there are other options. Community colleges adult learning annexes, private and charter schools are great places to start. They usually have fewer regulatory restrictions than public school systems.

I hope this helps.

Felon's dad wants to help him get a job

Felon's dad wants to help him get a job

Felon's dad wants to help him get a job

Former felons find new jobs and new hope

I have a son currently in prison on aggravated assault charge. He is in Bonham Texas which basically a holding facility in which he can only stay a maximum of two years before being transferred to a release facility. I get to see him almost every weekend but I do not know if that will be possible once he gets transferred. Here is my question. My son asked me if I could try and find out what jobs that he will be available to do since he is in on a aggravated assault charge. Once he is transferred, he can take college classes to help benefit him. He just does not know what classes to take to help him. He is on his second year of a four year sentence. If you can help me in any way or tell where I can attain this information it would be greatly appreciated. I tried on the internet putting in what type of jobs available with an aggravated assault charge and not hardly anything comes up. I just don't want to tell him something like nursing when I do not know if someone with his charges even if he has college will be allowed.

James

Felon's dad wants to help him get a job

Hello James,

I know people with aggravated assault convictions that are doing quite well for themselves. There are no professions or vocations that ban ex-offenders or felons. There may be jobs that require licensing or certifications that may prohibit them but they vary from state to state. If he is thinking about being an accountant, for example, I would contact the certification body in your state to see if he would be eligible.

I hope this answers your question.

Felons want to Join The Military

Felons want to Join The Military

Felons want to Join The Military
Can I Join the Army With a Felony on My Record?
Hi,

I found your info on line and was hoping you could help me find help for my son. He was convicted of a felony that will be reduced to a misdemeanor charge upon completion of his probation, however, for the next year it reflects a felony. He wants very much to join the military but has been told by the local recruiters that the government has cracked down and will not allow felons to join. We even have the county prosecutor willing to modify his current charge if the military will state his acceptance.

Do you have any contacts or advice that could help my son? He's a good kid that made a mistake writing a check that belonged to his grandfather and was convicted of forgery.

Any guidance would be much appreciated!

Sincerely,

Kent

Felons want to Join The Military

Hello Kent,

You're on the right track. Frequently ex-offender and felon job searches start with some legal assistance. Petitioning prosecutors to downgrade non-violent felonies to misdemeanors is a good choice. If more felons did this, it would make getting a job a lot easier.

Felons want to Join The Military
Next I would look to the Congressman from your district for assistance. They have staff who address constituent concerns. In a letter, he should express remorse for his poor decision and a desire to make his life better. He should also explain how joining the military would not only make him a better person but allow him to serve his country. His crime is non-violent so he has a better chance of being successful.

You can find your Congressman in the blue pages of your local telephone directory.

I hope this helps.

Does sealing of records help felons get jobs?

Does sealing of records help felons get jobs?

State speeds sealing of criminal records

I had a deferred sentence. After completing probation, the guilty plea was withdrawn. I then sealed the record. This was twenty years ago. I then applied for a job as a corrections officer and was denied the position because my federal background said I had this on my record. Please help. Not sure if I was denied because of the deferred judgment or because I did not disclose my sealed record.

I am confused, so let me tell you what I know about deferred sentences.

Does sealing of records help felons get jobs?

Does sealing of records help felons get jobs?
Often first time offenders, depending on the severity of the crime, are offered adjudicated sentences as a means to keep the load on the court system down. The offender is given certain terms to abide by. In most cases, when the terms are met (usually a fine and probation,) the original charges are dropped but they remain as charges not convictions. Anyone accessing your record will not see the charges. The exception is that your deferment and its terms are always visible to the court system, law enforcement and government agencies. The same applies to expungement and sealing of records. Many ex-offenders and felons looking for jobs consider expungement to help the get jobs. Expungement and sealing will only hide the record from public view but it will still be visible to the court system, law enforcement and government agencies.

I hope this gives you a better understanding.  This is not intended as legal advice just a bit of information.  To get a more definitive understanding as it relates to the statutes in your state, speak with a qualified legal professional.

I always suggest that my students contact the nearest legal aid office.  Legal aid can give you answers about expungement and/or sealing of records as it relates to your state.  Legal aid may offer low-cost or no cost assistance in getting the process done.

Felon Wants Job as a Teacher

Felon Wants Job as a Teacher
Felon Wants Job as a Teacher

Teacher gets second chance after felony conviction

I have a criminal record for credit card abuse when I was 18. Long story short, I was in the wrong place at the wrong time. My room mate used it at a grocery store and I was the driver, but did not know until after. When I found out, and the investigators talked to me, I told him everything. My options were receive probation and community service for $1500 or fight it for $10,000. Needless to say I was a kid and didn't have that kind of money so I had to do the probation. I want to teach and I'm 29 now, my question is will I be able to or am I wasting my time in school? I just need to know so I can change my major.

Thank You for your time.

Jenny

Felon Wants Job as a Teacher

Hello jenny,

You may want to look into expungement. I'm not sure what state you are in so you better speak to a legal professional. Often felons and ex-offenders require some legal assistance before looking for jobs. I suggest contacting your local legal aid office. You may qualify for low-cost or no-cost legal assistance.

You can always contact the school board where you wish to teach to find out if your conviction would exclude you from employment consideration. If you find that it will, there are other teaching options.  You may try private schools, career schools and even community colleges. They usually have fewer restrictions than public schools.

I hope this helps.

Besides Jobs, What Do Ex-offenders and Felons Need?

Besides Jobs, What Do Ex-offenders and Felons Need?

http://www.howfelonscangetjobs.com/2013/04/Jobs-Ex-offenders-felons-Need.htmlI use this blog to answer questions from ex-offenders and felons looking for jobs. From time to time, I come across some things from others that I feel should be shared. This comes from a human services student, Roger P., who would like to know directly from those in need what is needed.

"I am not a convicted felon or an ex-offender, however, I know many people who are and see the struggle they have in that life situation. Today something tugged at my heartstrings. I am human services student, currently working on certification as an alcohol and drug counselor. I have been doing research for a class on the topic of criminality. My first instinct was to explain what criminal thinking is and how it is changed. However, my research has led me in a different direction. I have decided to concentrate on the lack of resources, myths rubber-stamped by society, and postulating an awareness of these struggles that continue the cycle to recidivism.

I'm asking you, to help me understand, how I can help you and others, who wear that rubber-stamp (CONVICTED FELON), to live productive, meaningful, and happy lives. The only person who truly understands what it is to be oppressed is the oppressed person. As the societal oppressor, I can stand on your shoulders all day long and never know what it feels like for you to have me standing on your shoulders."

All comments are welcome

I Never Use Indeed To Help Felons Get Jobs

I Never Use Indeed To Help Felons Get Jobs

I Never Use Indeed To Help Felons Get Jobs
I often hear of people using Indeed to look for jobs.  In fact, Indeed says that it gets 140 million unique visitors to its website every month.  Out of that number, I wonder how many real job leads are found there and out of that number, how many people actually get jobs.  When you click on the "apply" links on the Indeed website, what happens?  When you click the "apply" link you are asked for your personal information but I'm not really sure if the application actually reaches the employer.

My experience is that when you sign up with Indeed your email address is sold  and you will get tons of emails from career schools, how to make money at home schemes and other things that have nothing to do with getting jobs.  I never encourage the ex-offenders and felons I work with to use Indeed.  A lot of the job listings are stale and the jobs are no longer there.  I have also seen instances where the job didn't even exist.  For instance, I saw one job listed that I always see in my area here in southern New Jersey.  I mean that I see the same job listed all the time.  It was for a job at a nationwide retailer.  It was one of the companies on my list of companies that hire ex-offenders and felons.  So, I went to the store to talk to the manager, who I have known for years to see if the job was actually open.  The manger told me that he had no openings and that Indeed has had that job posted for months.

I Never Use Indeed To Help Felons Get Jobs

I Never Use Indeed To Help Felons Get JobsCan Indeed be valuable in any way?  I teach my students that if they must use Indeed,  never sign up for their website so they don't get bombarded with a bunch of spam emails.  Secondly search for jobs their area but don't click the links on the Indeed website.  Instead of clicking the link, look up the company on your own.  For example, if Indeed lists a job at XYZ company, don't click the link on Indeed, go directly to the XYZ website.   Once you get there look for the link to the company's own employment section.  It often is at the very bottom in small print and it may say "Employment" or "Careers."  Click on the link.  You will be surprised at what you will find.  You will find all of the actual open positions along with the job descriptions, requirement and how to apply.  If the company is nation-wide the job listings will be listed by geographical location.  You will often find more jobs than are listed on Indeed.

You will find that this will result in more and better job leads.

Best of luck in your job search.  Please feel free to comment on this article.

Felons can find jobs and assistance

Felons can find jobs and assistance

Felons can find jobs and assistance
Hello,

My name is Angel and I'm having a really hard time. I am a felon and I can't seem to get a job anywhere. Nobody wants to deal with me . My parent agreed to help me get back on my feet. Now my parent is going back on their word so I'm all alone in a rough city trying to make it but nobody wants to give me a second chance.

I'm the mother of 4 and I can't get any help. I never went to jail I got probation and house arrest. I have finished house arrest but I have another year of probation and nobody is trying to give me the time of day. I'm about to be in the street and I have nothing to fall back on. No money, no car, and no home. I feel like I can't go on but I can't give up. Is there somebody, anybody out there I can go to.

I'm in Chicago and wow its hard here if u aren't a felon. I committed a white collar crime, conspiracy to commit fraud that seems to be the worst crime. Nobody wants to give u another chance. I messed up and I know I did and I don't ever wanna do anything illegal ever again. I was trying to feed my family. Being a single mom is a very challenging job but I know I don't have to commit a crime to survive but nobody will even give me a chance to prove that or myself. What do I do?

Angel

Felons join the Military

Felons join the Military

Felons join the MilitaryHello. My name is Yamile. How are you? I am 30 years old and was arrested for drug possession in 2002. In this one arrest they were charging me with 3 felony cocaine possessions and 1 misdemeanor marijuana possession (under 20 grams). The judge threw out 2 cocaine possessions (no action) resulting in only one felony and 1 misdemeanor. I had plead not guilty since the stuff was someone else's who threw it in my car so since it was my car and I was the driver, I was arrested. I completed a program which left the 1 felony and the 1 misdemeanor as nollo pros (both of them). I was not convicted. I had a car accident in 2001 and got the ticket. In 2008 I was stopped for supposedly running a stop sign which I fought and paid a 126 dollar fine. I've always wanted to join the military since I was 15 but didn't even bother going in when a recruiter over the phone (2008) told me I would never get in. Do I need a waiver for all 3 things? What is an approximate of my chances. This is killing me due to the fact that the army has been my lifelong dream and don't know if there is even a chance for me. Thank you for your time and your answer will be greatly appreciated.

Felons join the Military

Hello Yamile,

Felons join the MilitaryI believe your are referring to Nolle Prosequi. I am not a legal professional but in most cases, Nolle Prosequi is declaration made by a prosecutor in a criminal case or by a plaintiff in a civil lawsuit either before or during trial, meaning the case against the defendant is being dropped. The declaration may be made because the charges cannot be proved. To be absolutely certain, contact the prosecutor associated with your case.

Next, get a copy of your criminal record to be certain what is on it. The best record would come from the FBI.

Individuals can obtain a copy of their national criminal history record from the FBI by submitting a request to the address below. In order to receive a copy of your FBI record for personal, employment, or international work requirements the FBI requires the following:

1) A signed written request with a brief explanation for the request and your complete return
mailing address.

2) Each request must contain two completed applicant fingerprint cards with all of the applicant's
personal information (name, date of birth, place of birth, etc.) and a current set of 10 rolled
fingerprints and eight flat finger impressions. Fingerprints and impressions must be taken by a
local law enforcement agency.

3) An $18.00 fee in U.S. currency by certified check or money order payable to the United States Treasury. This information is provided in compliance with the U.S. Freedom of Information Act.

FBI
CJIS Division
ATTN: SCU, MOD.D-2
1000 Custer Hollow Road
Clarksburg, West Virginia 26303

For more information, you may contact the FBI at 304-625-3878

Felons join the Military
Once you get a copy of your criminal history, you can take it to the Army recruiter to see if you are eligible for a waiver that could make you eligible.

With so many ex-offenders and felons looking for jobs, the military may be an option.

I hope this helps.

Can felons with Withheld Adjudication get jobs?

Can felons with Withheld Adjudication get jobs?

Can felons with Withheld Adjudication get jobs?
Hi,

I am 26 years old and have never been arrested and I am currently in college pursuing a diploma in Allied Health and I was arrested in October for a felony under the wrong title of Unemployment Compensation Fraud even though I tried to explain that I never received any unemployment and showed letter stated the same stating ineligible it didn't matter. So when I went to court I was unable to afford a lawyer and had to settle for a public offender explained that the case was in reference to public assistance which I agreed to make payments because of a simple mistake of reporting a beginning date of employment. I was back and forth with communication with DCF explaining to them that I was no longer employed and a full time student but DCF reported not receiving payments and I was arrested. At court the defender told me State Attorney wanted to make a deal that I have no conviction, plead guilty but be withheld, pay restitution, and no parole and that it would not be on my record but I found out the hard way that it was because of my apartment complex that charge is showing as a FELONY..so my question is will I still be able to obtain employment even though I wasn't convicted but arrested because employers will only see FELONY.

Can felons with Withheld Adjudication get jobs?

Hello,

Can felons with Withheld Adjudication get jobs?
I'm not an attorney but it sounds like you have what is known as a Withheld Adjudication. In that case you may have to find out exactly what the conditions are. In most instances, once the conditions are met (typically a fine and probation,) the charges are dismissed. They will however appear on background checks as charges but not convictions. Anybody doing a background check (other than law enforcement, the court system, and government agencies) will only see the charges. Typically employers are only concerned with convictions and not charges. To be absolutely sure, contact the prosecutor associated with your case.

If you are still concerned with the charge, you may look into expungement. Many ex-offenders and felons looking for jobs seek legal assistance. I suggest contacting your local legal aid office to see if expungement is an option for you.

I hope this helps.

Does expungement help ex-offenders and felons looking for jobs

Does expungement help ex-offenders and felons looking for jobs?

Does expungement help ex-offenders and felons looking for jobs?Hello,

I am writing to find out is there any professional job that I can obtain because of the felony that I have from 2007? I have a Domestic Violence felony that I was convicted of in 2007 due to the fact that it was a dispute between me and my first wife. I am located in Texas and wanted to know, is it possible for me to get it expunge or sealed? Because I am relocating to Florida with my current wife and I have one course to finish to have my nursing licenses....I wanted to know if I get it sealed or expunge in Texas,. could I obtain my license in Florida? Or if I cannot get it sealed or expunge in Texas can I still obtain my license in Florida since it is a Texas Felony? I don't know how long I have to wait to get it expunge or sealed in Texas....I don't know the process to even start.

Does expungement help ex-offenders and felons looking for jobs?

Hello,

If your conviction is in Texas, a Texas court would have to expunge or seal it. There is a twist to expungementExpungement or sealing does not erase records but hides them from public view. If an expungement is granted the conviction will always be visible to government agencies, the court system and law enforcement. Licenses are granted by some level of government.

Many ex-offenders and felons looking for jobs seek legal assistance. I suggest contacting your local legal aid office first to see if expungement or sealing are viable options and then to get help applying for it. I would never try to do it alone.

Felon in Florida looks to expungement to get jobs

Felon in Florida looks to expungement to get jobs
I was convicted in the state of Florida for 5 counts of fraud I did my probation 2.5 (was given 5) paid restitution and now looking for work why is is that when an employer does a background check on me the status says active? Next I am in the process of trying to get this sealed/expunged. When that is settled will I be able to get a security license so I can work as a security guard or how about my RN license as I am currently in school working on that, am I wasting my time?

Thanks

Unfortunately many people believe that sealing or expungement of records will erase their criminal records. In most cases and in most states, expungement means that their convictions will invisible to the public. The will always be visible to law enforcement, the court system and government agencies. Since most licensing is done through state agencies, expungement will not help them.

Many ex-offenders and felons looking for jobs seek legal counsel before the can start an effect job search just to see how their records will impact their ability to get jobs. I suggest contacting your local legal aid office to see just how viable an option expungement is for you. Next I would contact the agencies that issue the licenses you want to see if you are eligible.

Felon in Atlanta needs help finding Jobs

Felon in Atlanta needs help finding Jobs

Felon in Atlanta needs help finding Jobs
My husband just relocated here to Atlanta to be with his family. He is a convicted felon. It has been hard for him to find a job for many reasons. For one, I work two jobs to support us and he stays home with our two youngest children (we have 5) during the day. Secondly, we do not know a lot of people here in Atlanta,GA to network with. And of course....its hard to get a job period, add a felony to it and it is even harder!

We are searching for possible job search programs that will help us get childcare and help him be able to look for employment. I am on waiting list for assistance for childcare but I have been waiting for months. We can not afford childcare without him working. It is only by Gods grace that we have made it this far. Any advice or suggestions would be great!!!!

Thanks

Hello,

I'm sorry your husband is having so much trouble. First let me suggest that he try The One-stop Career Center in Atlanta. There he will find a variety of services that can not only help him find a job but perhaps training for a new career. These centers are underutilized resources for ex-offenders and felons looking for jobs.  Among the resources you will find are current lists of job openings in your area.

You can find the center in Atlanta here:

Georgia Department of Labor

148 Andrew Young International Boulevard
Suite 650
Atlanta, GA 30303
404-656-3011

www.dol.state.ga.us/

Another great resource for ex-offenders and felons is Goodwill of North Georgia. Goodwill operates a computerized training center that provides career alternatives for unemployed and underemployed people.  Your husband can get specialized training to be certified in the following trades:

Floor Technician/Custodial Certification

Forklift Training

Hospitality Opportunity Program

Women in Non-Traditional Occupations

Here is the great part, after completion, the center provides job placement and retention services.  This center also has its own staffing service that places not only those with trade certifications, but others looking for jobs.  You can get more information here:

I hope this helps.
