Information to Help Felons get Jobs

Information to Help Felons get Jobs

Can ex-felons get local jobs

Hello Mr. Mayo,

I work with felons in a job center in Ohio and I see what they go through everyday trying to find jobs. I have been to your website and I find it appalling that you want to profit from felons by selling them a book that they need.  You say that you want to help felons but it looks like you are helping yourself.

You should be giving your book away.

Debbie

Information to Help Felons get Jobs

Hello Debbie,

I'm sorry you feel that I'm taking advantage of felons. You believe that I should be giving my book away.  You say that you help felons at a job center.  Do you do it for nothing?  You look for your check on Friday don't you?

Most of the people who purchase my book are not felons, but family or friends who want to help them.  Some them believe that the information in my book might benefit them more than buying them a pack of cigarettes or a drink.  I know that there are people that want to help a friend or a family member that may not have the $17.95 that we are asking for the softcover book, so we offer an ebook at a price that almost anyone can afford.  This ebook can be read on any device and is completely printable. You can check it out here: From Jail to a Job

If you were on my website. you were probably looking for information.  I also have two blogs that I have answered hundreds of questions from ex-offenders and felons looking for jobs.  You can find those blogs here:

How Felons Can Get Jobs

Real Answers for Ex-offenders and Felons Looking for Jobs

That's two blogs with tons of free information to help felons get jobs.  Who knows you may even learn some things from my blogs that you can use to help your clients.

Best of luck to you and your clients Debbie!

Second chances benefit everyone

Hello,

I was reading your blog about jobs for ex felons and was curious if you could provide some information. A little information about my history, in April 1982 I was charged with a 1st degree felony charge of aggravated burglary and was told to plead guilty by a court appointed attorney even though I wanted to plead not guilty he said I would be punished for taking it to trial and the judge agreed to probation so I plead guilty and was sentenced to a term of 2 - 15 in Ohio State Reformatory. Well I spent 9 months there and my family got another attorney and he got it reduced to a felony 2 and I was released. I only spent a year on Parole and was released on good behavior so that is 1 felony against me.

I can get a job almost anywhere but I cannot keep it because of the 911 terrorist attacks. everyone now does background checks and asks if you have ever been convicted of a felony
which should not be allowed. Since then I was terminated from a job for no reason and have been charged with unauthorized use of property and it is pending felony 5 but the judge agreed to probation and this happened all because I helped the HR manager with her email and the company found out I did this after I was terminated so they called the FBI and that is how I was charged.

I have a bachelor of science in health administration and an extensive background in information technology but there is no way I will ever work legally again. Any advice or know any companies who hire felons? I am working with state senators to get the expungement laws changed in Ohio but this could take years and the money I have saved up I have been living on is all but gone so I need a job.

Thanks

Rick

That's quite a story. My suggestion to you is to only apply for jobs with cover letters and resumes. Often when ex-offenders and felons apply this way, the question about criminal background never comes up. If it ever does, be honest. Don't focus on your past.  Shift the attention to the things you have done since your mistakes onto what you have done to improve yourself.  Check out the videos below.  It may give a few ideas that could lead to a felon getting a job.

Mom wants to help felon get a job
Locked Up, Then Locked Out
My son is 20 and he made a bad choice by hanging out with the wrong crowd and was arrested for possession of a stolen firearm, did a couple of days in jail for ignoring house arrest one day for not coming home on time. My husband has been offered a transfer to Europe and my son's probation is for 5 years.

Is my son allowed to leave the state to go with us to Europe and seek employment there, should this be brought up to his P.O.

Also, will he be able to find a job in Minnesota in the meantime until our move which is at the end of this year? Any suggestions on job searching would be greatly appreciated.

Hoping you can help me, he's our son and I love him so much and want only the best for him.

Thanks for listening

Desperate Loving Mom

Mom wants to help felon get a job

Hello Mom,

Felons with probation usually have to finish the terms of probation before they can leave the state. I am guessing that he will be in violation of his probation if he leaves before it is finished. To be sure, contact his probation officer.

Possession of a stolen firearm is not the worst charge in the world. Hopefully, it will not hinder him too much.

He can get help on his job search at the nearest One-stop Career center. You can the center nearest you at this link:

There are many resources at the One-stop Center.  The video below will give you some idea about what the center has to offer and how he can be helped in his job search.

CBIA Session Promotes Hiring Ex-Offenders

My friend has been out of prison for over 15 years and is losing hope of finding substantial work help maintain his home. Does this Act really work or is this another G. W. Bush "Smoke Screen".

Will "Second Chance" help felons get jobs?

I always tell ex-offenders and felons looking for jobs to depend on their will to work hard. It would be foolish to wait for any program or legislation to solve a problem for you. With or without social programs, felons can only hope to get jobs by making themselves employable enough to compete for jobs on the open market.  This will take a definite plan of action that includes a well written resume, job search and interview skills to start.  It will take hours of hard work.

He can get a head start on his job search by making a visit to the local One-stop Career Center.  This should be the first stop for anyone looking for jobs especially those with criminal records.  He will find a number of valuable services that could get him ready to compete for jobs.  He may also find opportunities for training that could mean a new career.  You can find the closest One-stop Career Center as well as all of the available services here:

Felon wants Job as Chef

Felon wants Job as Chef

Felon wants Job as Chef

On the Rise Bakery gives felons, addicts second chance

I have a 22 year old daughter that is very intelligent, (which upsets me more about what she did) and a dedicated worker who knew she wanted to be a cook since 8th grade. Over the past year, she was dating a whack job that threatened her with a gun. One day while he was working, she went to his apartment and took his gun. Not a bad idea if she threw it in the river; however, stupidly she hocked it using her friends ID. the felony charge is not for taking the gun but using false id to hock it. She graduates the end of the month and cannot find work.

This is kickoff time for AZ but the big hotels that doing the hiring are doing thorough background checks. She had a great job lined up with Wigwam. In fact, the HR director told her--this is a great company and a ache to work any where in the world. That Friday she was supposed to go to orientation. Unfortunately, the HR Dir. called her and said because of her felony change they cannot hire her. She did a stupid thing--no question there; I told the judge that regardless that we are from New Jersey the closest she had come to seeing a gun was by a policeman and not Tony Soprano. She is really in the dumps. She is seeing a psychiatrist and works with a psychologist.
Do you have any suggestions to help her get her career going?

Thank you for time,

 Felon wants Job as Chef

Felon wants Job as ChefAll is not lost. As I often suggest to ex-offenders and felons who seek jobs in the culinary arts, large corporate outlets may not be the best choice. They often have hiring practices that are determined at the corporate level. She may be better off looking for jobs at independent restaurants and catering companies. Check your local telephone directory and start calling.

Also she may seek assistance from independent temporary employment agencies. Often temporary assignments turn into full time jobs. There are temporary agencies that primarily work with the service industry. Smaller independent temporary staffing agencies are not bound by discriminatory hiring guidelines as larger nation-wide agencies and can hire anyone they choose.

Ex-offenders and felons looking for jobs may have to put in extra work to get hired.

I hope this helps.

Felon needs help finding a job

Felon needs help finding a job

Ex-offenders less likely to quit their jobs,

no more likely to be fired than other employees

Dear sir:

I don't know who to turn to anymore with my questions. I was convicted in embezzlement and fraud in 2008 in County of Sacramento, CA. I am currently on probation. I finish my FURLOUGH through the city of Sac, Sheriffs Dept in May 2008. I am still currently doing IHSS services for my parents because I couldn't find a job to do WORK furlough program, so my brother just got a job with the State of CA and told to take over them. Thanks to our Gov. Soon, the IHSS program have to go through fingerprint. So, I will loose it soon.

I know what I did wrong and my consequences. I didn't want my four kids to stay on the street so I did it. I am change now. I recently graduated in Medical Assistant and REALLY SEARCHING for a job so help me pay my bills and fines. I feel like giving up. Seems like I can't FIND a job anywhere. I think about everyday what it will be like if I didn't comment embezzlement and fraud. Please, give me advice to help me find a job in the Sacramento, CA region. I loosing hope. :(

Sincerely:

"Believer"

Felon needs help finding a job

Dear Believer,

Embezzlement is a serious conviction and it is going to take some out-of-the-box thinking. First of all I would suggest checking with medical the licensing board in your state to inquire if you are eligible to be licensed. Often ex-offenders and felons have difficulty obtaining certain types of jobs. You can get info here:

http://www.mbc.ca.gov/

If you can, I would then suggest you do a bit of networking. Contact every elected official in your voting district and enlist their help in assisting you. They all have staffs that respond to inquiries made by citizens in their respective districts. Also contact the judge who sentenced you. In a letter I would express remorse regarding you past choices and what you have done to overcome your mistakes. Never ask for jobs, always ask for advice. This works especially well in election years.  You would be surprised at the type of responses you will receive, and you will receive responses. Ex-offender and felon job searches will be difficult but hard work and determination will pay off

I hope this helps.

Jobs for Felons

How to Get a Job After You Commit a Felony

Hello,

I would like to ask a question about trying to find a job for someone who is a Grand Larceny offender. I have found it to be very hard in these days and times trying to find a job when you have convicted of a charge such as Grand Larceny. No one want to hire you or even give you a chance. I was convicted 5 years ago. I was able to find a job after I was convicted. But due to the economy right now I was laid off over a year and a half ago where I was a manger at a Bookstore. Since that time I have been blessed to be on unemployment. The unemployment will soon run out and I don't know what I am going to do. It's not hard for me to get a job I just know when they say that they are going to do a background check they will always re-track their offer. So how do I find a job that will work with my charge. I have over 10 years to management and I can't even get a job sweeping the floor. I would take that job if offered, I would like to add. I would like your input if you have the time.

Thanks

Felon Needs help Finding a Job

Hello,

I encourage ex-offenders and felons to apply for jobs using resumes with well written cover letters. Often this will help them get around the application process.  Also, Getting a job with a criminal record is truly a numbers game.  You should apply for every job you feel you are qualified for.  Apply, apply, apply until you find an employer who will give you a shot.

I also suggest contacting your local United Way office. The United Way supports various social service organizations some of which provide services for ex-offenders and felons looking for jobs.

I hope this helps

Felon wants corporate job

Felon wants corporate job

Want to keep ex-criminals on the straight and narrow?

Make it easier to get a job

I have a previous drug charge which I am sealing. Can I still get a good corporate job?

Back in 2016 I was charged with a possession charge which I am not to proud of. I later successfully completed all necessary requirements and now qualify for the option to seal my record. My question is can I still graduate from college and get a good corporate job? I am currently studying to become an administrator in business. Do you know of any personal stories or people with good jobs that have sealed records?

 Felon wants corporate job

Hello sir,

You are in a better position than most convicted felons looking for jobs. Once your case is sealed, it will only be visible to law enforcement agencies, the court system and government agencies.

I know of many felons who have put their criminal records behind them and gone on to successful corporate careers.  Many companies hire ex-offenders and felons. I tell all of my students not to exclude yourself from any jobs.  Apply for all jobs you feel you qualify for.

One suggestion I have for you is, whenever possible, apply for jobs using you resume and a well written cover letter.  Often when felons apply this way, the question of criminal records do not come up.  If it does come up, talk about the mistakes of your youth and how hard you have worked to overcome that mistake.

Can A felon get a Job as a Nurse?

Can A felon get a Job as a Nurse?

Can A felon get a Job as a Nurse?

The law said an ex-felon couldn’t be a nurse.

So this single mom got the law changed.

My name is Danielle. I am 17 years I was sent to a 10 month program and I turn 18 in 2 weeks. I want to take my Certified Nurses Assistant class. Will my record hold me back? I'm going to college to be a Registered Nurse.

Will my record hold me back?

Can A felon get a Job as a Nurse?

Hello Danielle,

Can A felon get a Job as a Nurse?I have worked with ex-offenders who have criminal convictions and hold health care licenses here in the state of New Jersey. I don’t know where you live or what your offense was, but you can contact the medical licensing board in your state. They will be able to advise you of licensing restrictions relating to your conviction.

Often ex-offender and felon job searches require some legal assistance. Once again, I don't know what your conviction is but it may be possible to have your charge expunged or downgraded. This will make it easier to work with. I suggest you contact your local legal aid office. You may be able to low-cost or no cost assistance getting this done.  Expungement, unfortunately will not help you to get licensed. Expunged or sealed, your conviction will always be visible to the court system, law enforcement and government agencies.

I hope this helps

Educated Felon looking for a Job

Educated Felon looking for a Job

Educated Felon looking for a Job
I recently was arrested for unemployment and food stamp fraud, I haven't been convicted but am in negotiations with the DA for 2 deferred adjudication felonies.

I lost my job as a teacher and have been looking for a job for months. I have a Bachelor's degree in Political Science, a Master's in Education and have an Associate degree in Science specializing in Paralegal technology. What are my options? I recently started looking at non-profit organizations but am not sure what kind of background check if any they will do?

Any suggestions?

Educated Felon looking for a Job

The plus in your situation is that you may have your adjudications deferred. In most cases, once you meet the terms of your agreement (usually fines and probation,) the charges will be dropped and only visible to law enforcement, government agencies and the court system. The prosecutor will be able to tell what will show up on background checks.

If you still wish to teach, you still have the option of private, parochial and charter schools. In the meantime you may want to contact your former teachers union to look into being reinstated.

Consider teaching on the college level especially community colleges who are always looking for qualified instructors. Colleges are usually more flexible than public schools who have to deal with school board regulations and state.

Like many felon job searches, yours may begin with a little legal assistance. Contact your local legal aid office and inquire about expungement of your records.

Educated Felon looking for a Job
As far as non-profit organizations, you may want to contact you local United Way. They support a myriad of groups and may offer some help deciding which is best for you.

I hope this helps.

If I can just get a shot who ever I work for will love me. I've never been fired and have good references but they won't even talk to me can you help me my school sure ain't. I really want to long haul but ain't choosy. I'm 48. The kids are grown and the ex is gone. It's perfect for me. I've always wanted to see the states. Please help if you can or point me in the right direction. I think I've applied on most of the sights.

Glen

Trucking Jobs May be Perfect for Ex-offenders and Felons

Hello Glen,

Your situation may be perfect for a trucking career. Often I meet ex-offenders and felons who have opted for driving jobs.

Here is a page with a good list of trucking companies. A large number of them hire ex-offenders and felons. There are even notations regarding their hiring policies.

Trucking Jobs May be Perfect for Ex-offenders and Felons
http://www.classadrivers.com/index.php?method=CompareCompanyListing&ListAll=1

Each trucking company makes its own rules regarding felony convictions. Some will employ a driver after 5 years or longer since the conviction. Other companies won't hire felons, regardless. You just need to get on the phone and start contacting carriers.

Without experience you are somewhat limited as to will hire you. Having the felony conviction reduces your pool of companies further. The best thing you can do is make some phone calls.

Best of luck to you.

Starting a Business Employing Ex-offenders and Felons

Starting a Business Employing Ex-offenders and Felons

Building a Business One Felon at a Time

Hi,

I am trying to start a business that employs ex-prisoners, primarily. I have a close family friend that has some theft charges from Indiana, (automatically felony in Indiana), the charges were placed on him by his Step-mother and a former girl friends mother after the Step mom told her she had pawn tickets indicating that her stepson pawned some of the womens' things,(given to him by the woman's daughter he was dating). Anyway, he is at heart a good kid and as time went on we found more kids that have ruined lives because of their not so loving family. I want to sell clothes and other popular items to teens and middle twenties types that are created and sold by former inmates.

I would like to see if former inmates that have a piece of a business and pride in what they do, while making some cash to live, will stop the pattern of repeat jail terms.
I have been trying to find more funds and was hoping you can help me so I can help them.

Leslie

Starting a Business Employing Ex-offenders and Felons

Hello Leslie,

This is certainly a worthy endeavor. Often I encourage those choosing to start a business is to contact the Service Corps of Retires Executives (SCORE.) SCORE is a nonprofit association dedicated to educating entrepreneurs and helping small business start, grow and succeed nationwide. There are both pros and cons to ex-offenders and felons starting businesses over getting jobs.  You can get more information here and the locations in Indiana here:

Writing a Resume for Someone Who Has Done Jail Time

Hi Eric,

I appreciate your website. This is my question. I have a felony and I need a job.  I see job listings that ask for a resume and a cover letter.  I don't know how do do neither one.  I need help to prepare a resume. Also, a cover letter. How can I get started?

Thank you,

Lisa

Felon needs a Resume to get a Job

Hello Lisa,

A felon stands a better chance of getting a job by applying with a resume and well written cover letter.  Often when one applies in this way, the question of a criminal record never comes up.  The quality of your resume will say a lot about you.  Every positive felon job search should begin with a well written resume. There are many resources on the internet to get you started.  If you have trouble after that, I suggest getting help from someone who has experience writing them.  Whatever you do, make sure both your resume and cover letter are top notch.  If you do not know anyone who can help, you can get help with writing a resume and other job search assistance at your local One-stop Career Center.

Are Pell Grants and other Financial Aid Programs Available to Felons?

Are Pell Grants and other Financial Aid Programs Available to Felons?

Students with criminal convictions have limited

 eligibility for federal student aid.
Can felons get financial aid for school?

There seems to be a lot of jobs for Ultra Sound and X-ray Techs. I think either of these would be great jobs for my son and other young people who want to turn their lives around. Please can someone give me an answer on this. I try hard to get as much help as I can in these areas. These people have done their time, they have been punished and so has the parents!

Are Pell Grants and other Financial Aid Programs Available to Felons?

Hello Katheia,

I have students with felony convictions who were able to get grants and loans for education and subsequently jobs. Unfortunately not everyone convicted of a felony is eligible. Certain drug convictions require that you complete an accepted drug rehabilitation program in order to be eligible for federal financial aid.

I suggest you contact the financial aid office of the institution you wish to attend. The institution wants you as a student and will do everything they can to help you get financial aid. They will also help you complete the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid.)

Are Pell Grants and other Financial Aid Programs Available to Felons? You can get get the more information as well as a down loadable FAFSA here:

http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/faq003.htm#faq003_5

There also may be financial aid available from your state.

I regards to getting a job in the medical field, I suggest contacting the medical licensing board in your state to find out if your conviction will prohibit you from being certified or licensed in your state.

I hope this helps
