I have three retail thefts at the felony level and one theft by deception felony as a result of drug addiction. My record dates back as far as 1999 with my last charge in 2001. I am a Radiation Therapist and a Radiographer. I worked in the mid west when my record was only 2 years old now I am in PA and I can't get a job because of my charges. I am so frustrated I don't know what to do. What does the bonding for felons to work do. Can you help me...maybe if I get bonded it would be easier to work.

 

 

Can the Federal Bonding Program help felons get jobs?

There are government programs that can help ex-offenders and felons get jobs.  One of the most effective is The Federal Bonding Program.  Employers may have issues concerning hiring people with have criminal records, poor work history or recovering alcohol or drug addicts. A lot employers are unwilling to hire ex-offenders or felons since they feel their past choices make them more likely to steal, commit fraud or be dishonest in other ways. Many felons are not able to be bonded. A bond is an insurance policy that protects an employer against money or property loss due to employee dishonesty. Certain criminal convictions make many felons ineligible for bonding by private companies. Felons, including anyone with a record of arrest, conviction or imprisonment, and anyone who has ever been on probation or parole, are considered "high risk" job applicants.

The Federal Bonding Program is  program sponsored by the Department of Labor. This program was created to assist high-risk, but qualified, job seekers who have bona fide offers of employment.  The Federal Bonding Program offers a business insurance policy that protects an employer against any possible losses incurred due to actions by high-risk employees. The program is designed to remove barriers to employment that high-risk job seekers - those who are qualified to work but need a second chance - face. It gives employers an incentive to hire qualified, high-risk job seekers who might otherwise be unable to find work.

These bonds are free of charge to both the applicant and the employer and can be issued for any job at any employer in any state, and covers any employee dishonesty. Any full or part-time employee paid wages (with Federal taxes automatically withheld) can be bonded, including persons hired by temporary employment agencies. Unfortunately, self-employed persons cannot be covered by these Fidelity Bonds. Fidelity bonds can help felons get jobs and can also be issued to cover already employed workers who need bonding to prevent being laid off or to secure transfer or promotion to a different job at their company.

I can only say thank you for the vast amount of useful data on the truckers website.  I have submitted a great many emails, and the data provided was so helpful.

Unfortunately, it appears a student driver with a 20 year old sex offense is out in the cold.  Do you have any words of wisdom.  My work history for the past ten years is pretty good, and my offense was the only that I have, and I have an excellent driving and ticket record as I move toward obtaining my CDL.  I am open to anything now though, and just wanted to hear from a national expert.

Thank you for your kind words.  It's always good to hear that I am helping someone.  I have a few suggestions for you.  Sex offenders tend to get hired for jobs that have limited contact with others.  Small retailers and wholesalers that deliver may be a good place to start.  Just driving around, notice how many delivery trucks and vans have their telephone numbers on them.  Moving companies are another option.  Smaller companies are good places to start because they probably won't spend a lot of money on expensive background checks.

Secondly I suggest applying to temporary agencies.  Some specialize in providing drivers.  Smaller independent agencies may tend to hire more ex-offenders and felons than larger agencies.  Independent temp agencies make their own decisions on who to hire unlike larger agencies that may have policies handed down from a parent company.  On the initial application, you may want to leave the "Have you ever been convicted....." question blank.  If you get an interview be prepared to talk about your conviction.  The "blank" may come up.

Lastly, as I always suggest to all ex-offenders and felons looking for jobs is go to the nearest One-stop Career Center. There you will find resources to help you get a job including lists of open positions in your immediate area.

I have seen your site from time to time b/c I am an ex felon that hasn't served time but does have 7 charges of larceny from 1996 and 1 DWI in 05. I cannot find work in NC. This is one of the hardest places to find employment. I have office skills along with various skills. I have gone thru the Community Success that tries to help ex inmates in Raleigh NC but I do think they are having a hard time as well. My life, as with others, is just getting worse without a source of income. Any suggestions? I would greatly appreciate your time.

Also, I viewed briefly your list of companies that may hire ex offenders....I do know Budget Car Rental will not as with Delta Airlines.

Unfortunately past offenses dealing with any type of theft are among the most difficult to work with especially jobs where valuables are involved. I love reading your blog.  Thank you for this information.  I have been looking for a job but I have a very serious charge and it is making it very hard for me to get a job.  In 2002, I got into a fight with a guy.  I didn't start it but the guy got beat up pretty bad and later died.  I was charged with assault and involuntary manslaughter.  I have done my time but I feel that this black mark is keeping me from getting a job.

I am not a violent person but this thing makes me look like a monster.  What can I do?

Hello Henry,

That is quite a story.  It's unfortunate that hings turned out the way they did.  It certainly could have been a lot worse.  You could have been the other guy.  Your charge is serious but it is not the end of the world.  I work with ex-offenders and felons everyday and I have had students with similar felonies and they are working to this day.  To employers, theft, robbery and other crimes involving integrity are looked down far more than offenses like yours.

When you apply for jobs you should respond to the "Have you been convicted of a crime..." question this way.  When answering this question you must list four things.  You must list the location of the conviction (County, State,) the conviction, the date of the conviction and the disposition ( final outcome.)  It should look

like this:

Cook County, Illinois,   Involuntary Manslaughter (Isolated Incident,) June 2005, Time served, 13 years.

Notice the notation after the conviction "Isolated Incident."  This tells the employer that this was something that was not planned, it was circumstantial. You will be surprised how well this works.  When you get an interview, the charge will probably come up.  You should begin your explanation of the incident with "I'm glad you asked that question because I want you to be comfortable hiring me......."  then, most humbly explain what happened.

I tell every felon I work with that finding a job is a numbers game.  The more jobs you apply for, the more interviews you will get.  The more interviews you get, the more opportunities you will get to get hired.  Apply for every job you feel you qualify for.  Never eliminate yourself by not applying.

Me and my husband live in East Saint Louis, Ill. and we have a 2 two year old son.  I'm working but my husband isn't.  He can't find work anywhere.  His problem is he can't find anyplace the will hire him because he has a record.  He did something really stupid when he wad 18 years old.  He stole a lawn mower out of somebody's yard. Because of that stupid mistake he made as a kid, he now has a felony record and NOBODY will hire him. He is 27 now and this is still holding him back.  He has tried so many places and everyone keeps turning him down

Can you please help me? We're trying so hard to get on our feet and we can't because of this nine year old charge. I don't know what were going to do if he can't find a job.

I'm not sure how much a nine year old conviction is holding your husband back.  In these economic times, finding a job for everyone is tough.  What I tell felons looking for jobs is it's going to take a lot of hard work.  I remind them that find a job is a numbers game.  Felons are hired everyday.  The hard part is finding employers that will give a felon a chance at a job.  

What I mean by finding a job is a numbers game is, the more jobs leads you get the more chances you have to get an interview.  The more interviews you get, the better your chances of getting hired.  So, where is the best place to get job leads.  I encourage every felon to visit the local One-stop Career center.  The local One-stop is your state sponsored employment office.  There you will find a lot of services that can help your husband land a job.  Among those services are listings of open jobs in your area.  You can get one-on-one job search assistance from trained counselors.  There is resume assistance and referrals to job training that could lead to a career.  You can find your local One-stop Career center here:

 Another option for felons looking for jobs is to apply for temporary employment.  Often temporary jobs turn into more permanent situations.  When applying for employment at temporary agencies, my students have more success with smaller independent agencies as opposed to national companies.  In many cases, the large companies have regulations from their corporate offices that prohibit the hiring of ex-offenders and felons.  Independent agencies are free to hire anyone they feel would be a good employee.

Your husband will have to put in hard work to get a job.  I don't just mean hard work finding employers, but getting a professional looking resume, brushing up on his interviewing skills and getting the proper clothing to make good impression on employers.

My name is Michael. I was convicted of assault about 12yrs ago. I have struggled finding decent paying jobs. Most employers especially out here in Arizona will not give me a chance. I may have an opportunity to go back to school through a veterans program called VRAP. They pay for you to go to school for a year and give around $1400.00 a month.

 My question is this I was thinking about going for a respiratory tech or x ray tech position but I doubt I can get licensed here in AZ. You assume because of your conviction, you may not be able to be licensed. Why not find out for sure. Just because you are a felon don't assume anything. Here in NJ there are ex-offenders and  felons working in hospitals and doctor's offices.

Hello, my name is Kevin.  I live in New Jersey.  I've had a few drug charges in my past.  I was put on pre-trial intervention. in 2006 for possession of magic mushrooms, but towards the end of my P.T.I. I messed up again and got caught with possession of heroin (felony) in 2008.  I regret a lot of the things that I've done in my past, but people make mistakes, and I'm trying to change my life around.  People do change.  It's hard to get away from the past when it keeps coming up and haunting your future.

I've been off of probation for about 2 years, but I can't seem to land a job.  Every company I interview for asks about my criminal background, and I don't lie about it.  I thought companies like honesty.  Everyone has said they can't hire felons.  Nobody will give me a chance.  I've been on unemployment, but it's running out soon.  I don't know what to do.  If I didn't have the support of my family I don't know what I would be doing.

I've been applying to warehouse jobs, since my last job was a picker/packer at a warehouse.  I also have forklift experience, but I am not certified.  My question is how do I get a job, and down the road is it possible to get my felony charge expunged, since I have more then one charge?  Also are there any temp agencies that work to help felons get jobs?

Many companies hire ex-offenders and felons. I am in Southern New Jersey.  My students are often hired at Wal-mart, Home Depot and Lowe's.

As far as applying for employment at temporary agencies, my students have more success with smaller independent agencies as opposed to nation-wide companies.  In most cases, the large companies have regulations from their corporate offices that prohibit the hiring of ex-offenders and felons.  Independent agencies are free to hire anyone they feel would be a good employee.

Unfortunately the state of New Jersey only allows one felony expungement which one cannot even apply for until ten years has passed from the date of the completion of the sentence.

My name is Cynthia.  I am still currently on probation with a felony. I will be on probation until 2015, I was told by a lawyer that my felony will stay on me until 2023.  The state I was convicted in had a first time offenders act where I didn’t show up in any system.

 I live in North Carolina where the first time offender act does not apply.  I have been jobless for over a year. I have applied at several restaurants, retail stores, and other various places. I have been called to several interviews but the outcome is when the employers ask me what my felon is for they tell me they can’t hire me. It is for theft. So, I am back at square one with endless job applications, and no success.  McDonald's even said they would not hire me. I have three kids, two which are special needs, and a husband who is also disabled.  My husband is receiving disability and that alone doesn’t pay all the bills. We get food stamps, and medicaid. I am wanting to get off the public assistance and support my family. Is there anything else that I can do to help with my employment seeking?

JobLink Career Centers are the one-stop career centers in North Carolina. These centers provide a long list of services that can help prepare you for a job or even training for a new career.  Each center has counselors that provide individual assistance.  Often these counselors have experience working with people with criminal backgrounds and know of employers who have hired ex-offenders and felons.  Among the services offered you will find lists of open jobs in your area.  You may also get referrals to other agencies that provide services that can help your family.  You can find the center closest to you here:

Because you have a theft conviction, you may not be considered for retail, cash handling or other positions where valuables are at risk.  That must be taken into consideration when applying for jobs.

Background checks are always on the minds of those with records.  I encourage all ex-offenders and felons looking for jobs to apply with well written resumes and cover letters.  Often when applicants apply directly to employers this way, the question of a criminal record never comes up. This will give a prospective employer the opportunity to meet the person behind the resume. This works especially well with smaller companies that are less likely to do expensive background checks.

When meeting people face-to-face about jobs, it’s important to be honest, but never offer information or go too deeply into your case.  Answer any question with as brief an answer as you can while responding honestly.

Consider working as a temporary as a way of getting a permanent job. Temporary agencies use temporary agencies to quickly fill job vacancies  Often if temporary employees are found to be good workers, they are hired on as permanent employees  Other advantages to temporary employment are:


* You can try new types of work and learn new skills

* You can make new contacts.

* Build a work history.

* Earn a wage until you can find more permanent employment.



Make a list of temporary agencies in your area. Call each one to find out what types of jobs they have available and how to submit an application.  many have online applications. Apply just as you would any other employer.  Once again, it may be to your advantage to apply to smaller independent companies that have fewer hiring restrictions than large national companies.  Small independent companies are free to hire anyone they choose.

Each state has a network of centers that offer a variety of free services that can get you ready for work and assist you in finding employment. In addition, these centers offer training programs that can help on a felon job search. Some services available are:

Workshops (Resume Writing, Interviewing Skills, and related topics.)

Daily access to thousands of job listings

Job-related magazines and local newspapers

Job postings and referrals

Printers, fax machines, phones, and copiers for job search use

That’s a very good question. Many people believe that juvenile records disappear when one reach the age of adulthood. In most cases, juvenile records are sealed by the court. When a case is “sealed” it can only be examined by order of the court. Sealing of a criminal record entails that a court clerk is ordered by a judge to conceal a court record of criminal proceedings from public view. The records are not destroyed because under certain conditions, a court can order that previously sealed records be reopened. Loosely speaking, the effect of sealing is the court treats the information in the record as if never existed.

 A court not only seals its records, but also orders that records with information about the charges held by others be sealed as well. Persons may then by rights and legally respond to any inquiries about the arrest, acquittal, conviction etc., as if they never happened. For instance, you may by rights in a job interview or even under oath to deny a sealed conviction. Once a record has been sealed it is not gone. It will be visible to law enforcement, government agencies and the courts. This may impact you eligibility for civil service jobs or jobs that require a license or certification.

In some states, juvenile records are automatically sealed. You can find out if your juvenile record was automatically sealed or if you have to apply to have it sealed. An Attorney can help you with this. You may be able to get free legal advice regarding this at your local legal aid office.

My name is Martha.  I am a Phlebotomist.  I just got a felony in 2010.   I live in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.  Can you please help me help my self.  Before my conviction I was a phlebotomist working in a hospital.   I lost my job because of it.  My charges are aggravated assault and conspiracy.

Will I ever find work in that field again and if so what company should I go to or what programs are out here to help me help my self.  I also have a housing issue as well.  Do you have any advice on that.  I lost my section 8 due to my felony and I have a daughter I need to take care of before I lose her to the system.

It all happened years ago and I am having trouble finding a job anywhere... even places like Burger King. If you know of any places in the Antioch / Nashville area that would be a good place for me to look I would be greatly appreciated.... Frequent readers of my blog know, my first suggestion to ex-offenders and felons looking for jobs is the nearest One-stop Career Center. These are very underutilized resources that can not only help ex-offenders and felons get jobs but may help them find careers and vocational training.

In addition, these centers provide a long list of valuable services. Some services available are:
 

Career planning and counseling

Workshops (Resume Writing, Interviewing Skills, and related topics.)

Computers with internet access and word processing

Daily access to thousands of job listings in your immediate area

Job postings and referrals

Printers, fax machines, phones, and copiers to use to find jobs

Each center has trained counselors that provide one-on-one assistance. Many of them have experience assisting ex-offenders and felons looking for jobs.
