I get a lot of emails about getting a job with a criminal record.  I get quite a few from ex-offenders regarding the list of companies that hire ex-offenders and felons.  We have all seen the list.  It is posted on a number of websites.  I even have a variation of it on this blog here:

I have contacted each one of the companies on the list and none of them have official policies that exclude the hiring of ex-offenders.  My list is a little different because it includes companies that have hired students that I have worked with personally.

Many people that read this list are confused.  Just because an employer has hired an ex-offender in the past, does not mean it will hire every ex-offender or felon that applies for employment.  The nature of the conviction of the person applying will come into play.  For example, a person convicted of any type of theft or robbery will not be considered for any type of job where valuables are at risk.  A person with a drug conviction will not be considered for jobs in hospitals, clinics, nursing homes etc.  There maybe even local laws which prohibit those with drug related convictions to be employed anywhere alcohol is served.

Many types of jobs require licenses that people with certain types of convictions are ineligible for. 

I have also met people who have have applied for jobs with some of the employers on the list and come to the conclusion that the employer doesn't hire felons because the employer did not them.  Just by appearance, the person was a poor applicant who just didn't make a good impression or did not fit in what the employer feels a good employee looks like.

Before you apply for any position, you have make sure you put yourself in the best position to be hired.  The first and most important is appearance.

Do you have suitable interview clothes? For men, a well fitting suit with a nice shirt and tie would be the absolute best thing to have. That may not be possible for someone just coming home but I suggest that men at least have dark dress slacks, a light colored shirt and a coordinated tie. You should also have a pair of shoes that you can put some polish on. Not boots, not sneakers…shoes! A good number of my students buy

They find quality clothes at very low prices, clean and press them and they are ready to interview. Never mind how you get them, the right clothes will make the difference. You should also have a neat haircut and be clean shaven. If you wear a beard, it should be neat and trimmed. How do you look? Do you look like an ex-offender with a shirt and tie or do you look like a businessman? Do you look like you are going to a

business meeting? You should - an interview is a business meeting. You should always look like a professional who is there to make a business deal! Always dress like you have an interview even to fill out applications.  You will never get a second chance to make a first impression.

Women should wear a classic skirted or pant suit with a light colored blouse or a simple dress that does not come up above the knee.  Do not wear anything too tight or too skimpy.  Be sure to wear coordinated pumps that are neat and clean.  The pantyhose should match the skin with no pattern.

Hair should be neat and of natural color.  A short hairstyle is best, but tastefully done longer hair is fine.  Fingernails should be neatly trimmed with tasteful polish.  The make-up should be natural looking.  One set

List of Companies that hire ex-offenders and felonsof earrings (no larger than a quarter) no facial piercings or tongue ornaments, one ring per hand and no more than one bracelet per wrist.  If you have visible tattoos, especially on the neck or face, should be covered by makeup.

How are your interview skills.  Once again, you will have to leave an employer with a good impression of you, so brush up on your interviewing skills

Hello,

Thanks for creating your blog on information for ex-offenders. I am a first time offender who was convicted in 2007 and is having a hard time with gainful employment. I have approximately 17 years of human resources experience in the federal government service and 2.5 years of retail service. My felony is one of moral turpitude (forgery/utter forged check/obtaining money by false pretenses) which makes it difficult because of the trust factor. I would like to know if you have any recommendations for me to seeking gainful employment. I am currently on indefinite supervised probation for the payment of my restitution. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

I would suggest you contact the United Way in your office. The United Way supports a number of social services some of which offer assistance to ex-offenders and felons in need of jobs and other forms ex-offender / felon advocacy groups that know of companies that hire people with criminal backgrounds.

Felon with professional experience needs a jobIn the meantime, since you have clerical experience, I suggest you try temporary employment.  In many cases, temporary jobs turn into permanent jobs.  For ex-offenders and felons looking to get temp jobs, I suggest applying to small independent agencies rather the nationally known ones.  Smaller agencies can hire whomever they feel will be good.  The larger companies are more likely to have restrictions regarding the hiring of people with criminal records.  Take a look at the link below:

Jobs for Felons: Social Media can Hurt your Job SearchSocial media has become a huge part of the lives of many people.  It's a great way to connect and network with others all over the world.  I recently made a presentation at job fair where I met employers that have hired felons or ex-offenders in the past.

I asked 30 of the 50 or so employers "Are there any new techniques employers use to screen potential employees?" The overwhelming response was that they check applicant's social media.  Employers have started to monitor a potential employee's social media as a fast and really alternative to expensive background checks.

It's hard enough getting a job with a criminal record.  There can be things on your social media accounts that can make getting jobs for felons even harder.  There are a lot of things that employers look for on social media that can ruin an applicant's chances at getting  hired.  Here are the main things that may catch an employers eye.


Unprofessional Screen Name or Profile - Like it or not, employers will judge you by your screen name so choose wisely.  Names like "Sexy Kitten" or "Big Daddy D" may sound cool for connecting but they really won't help you get a job.  In fact it may hurt your chances to get a job.  You can never go wrong using your own name.

Information about Alcohol or Drug Use - A weekend of hard partying may have been fun but posting about it may really turn employers off.  Pictures of you passed out or impaired may be funny but it won't be to someone who may have wanted to hire you.

Inappropriate Photos or Videos - Picture and video of lewd or provocative behavior posted anywhere is damaging.  Be careful of other people posting stuff with you in it.  This can be equally damaging.  Also be mindful of being photographed or recorded in any situation that may related to criminal behavior.  Being recorded with guns, gang members or drug paraphernalia may boost your street credibility but it will have the opposite effect on your ability to get a job.

Derogatory Comments Related to Religion, Race, Sexual Orientation or Gender - No matter what your personal views are about these subjects, spouting them in a negative way on social media will really make you look bad to an employer especially if personal offense is taken.
Posting these types of things on social media is bad enough but sharing these types of things posted y others will have the same effect.  Also anyone can take anything you have posted and share it.  Even if you have deleted it, negative posts may still alive and shared all over the internet so be careful.

Social media is a sign of the times. It can even be a lot of fun but bear in mind the effect that it may have on your job search.  There are employers that may hire ex-offenders and felons.  Your social media will make a difference to someone who wants to hire a professional mature minded person.  Keep it clean, keep it professional, keep it G-Rated and you should have no problem.

Hi, My name is Jamie. I recently read your blog on ''felons-turn-to-military-to-find-jobs''. I have been extremely interested in joining the Army ever since I was a kid. My father spent 22 years in the Army, fought in the Gulf War, traveled the world and retired a Sergeant Major in the end. I have never looked up to anyone more than him. Joining the Army has been my one and only interest, even to this day.

 In 2011 (14 years old) I was charged with 1st degree assault with sexual motivation and it was dropped to 3rd degree. A felony none-the-less. My hopes at joining the Army were dashed and ever more so when I even tried applying in person. It's been over seven years now and I haven't had any trouble with the law and never plan to. I was young and stupid and regret what I did every day. I'm 21 now and am still trying to look ahead and see what I should do with my life, I literally never had any interest in my future except to join the Army and now I'm struggling.

I recently just heard about the Moral Waivers that were introduced in 2009 and was hoping you could shed some light on the matter. I would appreciate anything you have to offer. I want to serve my country and I want to follow in the footsteps of my father. Thank you.

Can a felon get a moral waiver to join the military?There are military personnel serving today with sexual assault convictions. In fact I have students who have joined the military. It is a growing trend that ex-offenders and felons having difficulty finding jobs are turning to serving in the military. It is my understanding that you are more likely to get a moral waiver from the Army or Navy than the other branches.

I suggest talking to a recruiter. A recruiter will tell you what type of waiver you will need and exactly how to apply.  Bear in mind that no one has the right to serve in the military and the granting of waivers is totally up to discretion of the Army.

Here's Who is Hiring for the Holidays So Far This Year

Employers are gearing up for the annual holiday shopping rush and once again looking to add seasonal workers to bolster their store, warehouse and logistics ranks.

Their announcements come as big chains are expecting strong holiday demand from shoppers, despite risks that the Delta variant may pose to consumer spending. Consulting firm KPMG predicts holiday sales for US retailers will grow 7% from last year, based on an August survey of 114 retail executives.

Like last year, many of the jobs advertised so far are related to online delivery of goods, such as mail carriers and warehouse workers. What's new for this year is enhanced recruiting tactics, which range from sign-on bonuses to job offers within half an hour of submitting an application.

Even though employers are posting jobs, there is no guarantee they'll be able to fill them. US businesses are facing trouble hiring staff right now, and there were a record 10.9 million job openings in July, according to the latest Bureau of Labor Statistics data.

Here are a few major employers who have said they're hiring holiday workers so far.

UPS

UPS (UPS) is hiring 100,000 part and full-time seasonal workers to meet holiday delivery demand, the same number the company brought on last year.
The roles are mainly for package handlers, drivers, and driver helpers, which assist drivers on delivery routes.

"This is the tightest hiring market we've ever seen," said UPS spokesperson Dan McMackin. UPS is adjusting by raising hourly pay in some markets, with roles starting at $15 an hour, and offering sign-on bonuses to hire seasonal employees.

The company is also speeding up application times for holiday hires. In the past, job candidates had to wait up to two weeks to receive an offer. This year, UPS is pledging offers for many roles within 30 minutes.

United States Postal Service

The US Postal Service is bringing on more than 40,000 workers to handle mail and package deliveries during what is typically the agency's busiest season.

The Postal Service is looking for mail carriers, mail handlers and drivers in cities and rural areas. It is holding around 60 job fairs around the country where candidates can apply, more events than the agency usually holds.

The Postal Service typically adds seasonal staff, although the number varies by year, agency spokesperson David Partenheimer said in an email.

Kohl's

Kohl's (KSS) wants to add 90,000 seasonal workers to stores and warehouses to meet customer demand, a similar figure to last year.

New for this year: Kohl's workers will be eligible to receive a bonus ranging from $100 to $400 for working through the holiday stretch.

Kohl's is also hiring seasonal employees for the first time at a new e-commerce fulfillment center in Etna, Ohio, and beauty advisors for Sephora mini-shops at 200 Kohl's stores.

Michaels

Arts and crafts chain Michaels is adding more than 20,000 workers in stores and distribution centers, up around 25% from last year.

Michaels said in an announcement last month that it offers competitive wages, flexible hours and a 30% discount to seasonal workers. Last year, Michaels hired more than half of seasonal in-store workers into permanent roles.

The arts and crafts industry has grown during the pandemic with people spending more time at home. Michaels sales at stores open for at least one year increased 4.8% in 2020 from a year earlier.

1-800-Flowers.com (FLWS) plans to hire more than 10,000 seasonal workers, a similar figure to last year.

The floral delivery retailer will bring on 10,000 employees to deliver food and gifts to customers from its brands, including Harry & David and Cheryl's Cookies.

It's looking to fill full-time and part-time positions in "key high-volume areas" such as gift assembly. The majority of roles are in Illinois, Ohio and Oregon.

The company is offering bonuses and increased pay for returning hires, said Steve Lightman, the company's group president of gourmet foods and gift baskets, in an email.

These moves are "on par with last year," Lightman said, and the company is exploring other incentives such as product giveaways and raffles to attract workers.

Ollie's Bargain Outlet

Discount chain Ollie's Bargain Outlet (OLLI) wants to add more than 3,000 workers for the holidays.

This figure is up slightly from last year due to new store growth, an Ollie's spokesperson said in an email. Ollie's has opened more than 40 stores in the past year.

Ollie's is hiring for store and warehouse positions.

The retailer is not offering any new incentives to attract workers this year, the spokesperson said, but has started holding in-person hiring events for the first time to reach a broader pool of applicants.
