There is help for ex-offenders and felons looking for jobs
I'm 20 years old and I committed a crime of burglary of the 3rd degree when I was 18 years of age I spent a year on probation which was over this past Dec. 3rd . Now as you know in my case it's vary hard to find work and people don't realize that other who've committed crimes can change for the better and my dream was to join the military and fight along side my brother and father. I've made mistakes and now I'm paying for it at a young age and I'm barely making it through life with little to no money. Do you have any advice idea or anything that can help me because I'm tired of being rejected employment and I'm tired of government officials telling me I can't do this when I know deep down inside if they made the same mistake they would like a little sympathy please write back.-Eric L.
A: Hello Eric,
I'm sorry you are having so much trouble. As I tell all ex-offenders and felons looking for jobs is to develop a plan. Your first stop should be your local One-stop Career Center. One-stop Career Centers are very underutilized resources that ex-offenders and felons can use not only to gain employment, but to get vocational guidance and preparation. Also, these centers offer a long list of useful services. Some services available are:
Career planning and counseling
Workshops (Resume Writing, Interviewing Skills, and related topics.)
Computers with internet access and word processing
Daily access to thousands of job listings
Job-related magazines and local newspapers
Job postings and referrals
Printers, fax machines, phones, and copiers for job searching
Every center is staffed with trained counselors that provide one-on-one help for job seekers. Many of them have experience helping ex-offenders and felons looking for jobs.
As stated in a previous post, you can find your nearest center here:

Where can ex-offenders and convicted felons find jobs
As far a joining the military. From time to time the military will offer waivers to those with criminal backgrounds. The Army has been the most lenient in the recruitment of ex-offenders and felons. If you have your heart sent on serving, I would contact the Army recruiter to see if this can be done for you.
I hope this helps.

I have to say that i dig what you do to speak info into the distressing hearts and minds of men and woman of troubled pasts. What i dont agree with is this post regarding the help and support of the young brother seeking to reach his highest peak involving a dream and ambition to do more with his life. I dont think you heard at all what was msg'd to you. Emotionally this man is troubled by the lack of reaching that peak due to the disrimination held against us as felons. Reentry is a process where we have served time sentenced and are released back into society with the intent to make use of an opportunity to make better of our lives and not the wrong decisions we had made before. Career centers are a sad hoax that the gov throws at us, and say "this is what you can, take it or leave it. Your dreams of being anything else are out the window." Do you honestly think that someone seeking to pursue a career in the military seeks the dead end position of 15 years as a dish washer? Career centers are a blatant sign of us as men and woman being dicriminated against. Seperated from society and thrown a bone to shut us up. The One Stop career centers i have been to are b.s., filled with employed felons and ex addicts who now have that 9 to 5 job and dont give two damns about the next person bc thier problem is solved. 8 hours and home, is their daily goal. Not everyone is illiterate either, so assuming that felons need to learn how to do things such as resumes and multiplication problems is an insult, bro. I feel that if you settle for that then you voluntarily throw your dreams away, because theres a glass ceiling that doesnt let you past GO dealing with those places. Im 26 and have been threw it all after my sentence and 5 years of parole. I seek the field of EMS and am told that im not allowed to perfom my talents in civil service. Is that b.s. or should i take my training and settle for less?! all in all when you do settle for less thinking that its gonna change, it wont!!! stop selling dreams for your own blog benefits bc im sick of men and woman like you with your info and no movement. Massachusettes has a "ban the box" movement, we too should feed off of that and use the voices and talents to do the same in our communities. there are ex offenders hurting, frustrated, angry and down & out. They dont want to hear basic simple b.s., We want to hear that there is a change. And for that change men and woman such as ourselves need to use our voices to speak out where it matters. I am starting a Petition against the United States of America to not only ban the felony question on apps, but against Equal Employment Opportunity standards that dont support ex offenders but it supports peircings on someones face, smh. Standing on facts and reality i will acheive the goal set. and with mena and woman who are tired of having to settle for the scraps thrown at us when we know we are more then capable, willing and hungry then the lazy a-holes who complain about waking up every morning to perform their responsibilities and duties of an everyday job. Foreigners have done it due to laziness of the modern everyday american, why can we??? my email is Mdurant48@gmail.com, pls make good use of this to anyone feeling frustrated and is willing to start a movement that benefits "US" and others to come.I respect your peacefulness bro, but we are emotionally hurting, mentally dstressed, physically tired, financially broken, and most of all spiritually exhausted. faced with reeality everyday, potential chefs are hungry, potential doctors are sick, potential patriots are fighting a war to stay out of personal prisons. Enough is enough.
