 Can I Get a Job as a Mechanic with a Criminal Record?

Local mechanic donates auto shop to help train ex-offenders

I am a felon with four burglary charges on my record, two class 2 felonies, and 2 class 3.  I live in the southwest and have been out of prison for almost 2 yrs.  I am on probation for another year.

I was convicted in May of 2011.  Since I have been out, I have attended and graduated from a. automotive institute with a diploma in diesel mechanic. I graduated almost 3 months ago and can't get a company to call me back or even give me a chance.  Even my school does not give me job leads like they have all of the guys I graduated with.  I'm sure it is because of my record.

I just want to ask you a question. With my record do you think any companies with good benefits ever give me a chance?  I feel like I have wasted my time and the last year of my life attending school.

Hello Bobby,

It seems that you are waiting for a job to come to you.  That probably won't happen.  I tell all of my students that finding a job is hard work.  Finding a job with a criminal record is harder work.  Ex-offenders and felons face tougher challenges the job seekers without records. 

One option would be to contact trucking companies in your area to see if they service their own trucks.  Because you don't have much hands-on experience you should apply as a mechanic's helper.  This means starting at the bottom, but you will gain valuable experience working with veteran mechanics. Often when you want something it means paying some dues.  Try applying at smaller independent companies.   This will also work at garages that service diesel trucks.  You can get a list of trucking companies and garages in your area from your local phone directory.  Another option is applying to national automotive service chains such as Pep Boys also as a helper.  In both cases I suggest you be totally honest about your past if questioned.

You may also find lists of open positions in your area at your local One-stop Career Center.  The center will also have other resources that can prepare you for a successful job search such as resume writing and interview preparation.  You can find your local One-stop Career Center at the link below.

Initiative to get ex-offenders back to work soars through the Senate

My husband was convicted of a felony 10 yrs ago. He just recently received an associates degree as well as his FCC and A&P licenses to become an avionics technician. I have been kind of resistant towards his degree path because it seems like such a restricted field for someone with a felony. I noticed you had a couple airlines listed on your list of people who hire felons. Do you think he has a chance with these companies to become a technician? Also, do you know anything about getting felonies removed from your record?

We do list airline on our list of companies that hire ex-offenders and felons.  The nature of the conviction in relation to the position applied for will come into play.  My suggestion is to apply to airlines using well written cover letters introducing the prospective employee's resume and the position desired.  Hopefully one will get an interview where he can meet someone with the power to make a decision.  At sometime during this process, the issue of the criminal record will come up and can be discussed.

As far as having felonies removed,  many people are a little confused when it comes to this issue no one can remove a criminal conviction.  The most that one can hope for is to have it removed from public view.  Many lawyers will advertise that they can erase criminal records.  Through processes like sealing or expungement they can get them hidden, but they will always be available to the court system, law enforcement and government agencies.  My suggestion to your husband is save himself a ton of money by contacting your local legal aid office.  Legal aid offices are usually staffed with young, hungry attorneys who are willing to work hard to get things done.  Statutes governing sealing and expungement of criminal records vary from state to state.  Legal aid will be able to tell him what options he has and what the impact will be on his record.  He may qualify for free or low-cost assistance.

Greetings,

I was able to read your website, and I am interested in your philosophy. I am a 28 year old felon in Alabama. My crime was credit card fraud and ID theft. Since it was my first conviction, I was granted 1 year parole with court costs. Even though the punishment is light, I am unable to find a job to help pay off the dues and support my family.

I have learned of the Federal Bonding Program, but it doesn't seem to be getting me anywhere. I have been on many interviews where I have put the crimes on the application, but they insist on running a background check, which of course comes up with the convictions. Then they say that I cannot be hired, even though it was on the application before you ran the social security number through. 

I keep trying somehow, someway everyday; and, I am not picky about jobs. I apply for general labor positions as well as a way to get on my feet. I apply with resumes and cover letters. Is there something else I am missing? Any advice would be welcome.

I'm sorry you are having so much trouble. Finding a job unfortunately is not an exact science. Finding a job with a criminal record is even tougher.

I suggest to all ex-offenders and felons looking for jobs to tell everyone they know that are looking for employment. Many people got their job leads from people they know. This is called networking. Networking is the most effective method of finding employment leads. Most jobs are never advertised because they are usually filled by personal contacts. In fact, employers would rather hire someone referred to them by people they know rather than to painfully sort through resumes and applications. How many people do you know? Each one of them could potentially help a felon get a job.

• Friends
• Relatives
• Neighbors
• Parole/probation officers
• Members of your religious group (especially ministers, priests, imams, etc.)
• Former teachers
• Former co- workers
• Former employers
• Classmates
• Casual acquaintances
• People you do business with (Hairstylists, barbers, doctors)

Look at the list above. In each group, list five people that you can contact. That is at least 55
people that could help you in your job search. Let each person know that you are looking for a job
and that any information they have for you would be helpful. Have copies of your resume handy
for your contacts to give to other people.

Another suggestion is to locate your local Goodwill. Goodwill hires ex-offenders and ex felons everyday giving them an opportunity to re-enter society.

I suggest to all felons looking for jobs to visit their local One-stop Career Center.  At the center you will find services than can help you find a job including resume preparation, interviewing skills and lists of available jobs in your area.  The center has counselors that provide one-on-one  assistance to get you on your way.  The counselors can also put you in contact with resources that could help you with your growing family.

Mom wants to help felon get a job

Locked Up, Then Locked Out

My son is 20 and he made a bad choice by hanging out with the wrong crowd and was arrested for possession of a stolen firearm, did a couple of days in jail for ignoring house arrest one day for not coming home on time. My husband has been offered a transfer to Europe and my son's probation is for 5 years.

Is my son allowed to leave the state to go with us to Europe and seek employment there, should this be brought up to his P.O.

Also, will he be able to find a job in Minnesota in the meantime until our move which is at the end of this year? Any suggestions on job searching would be greatly appreciated.

Hoping you can help me, he's our son and I love him so much and want only the best for him.

Hello Mom,

Felons with probation usually have to finish the terms of probation before they can leave the state. I am guessing that he will be in violation of his probation if he leaves before it is finished. To be sure, contact his probation officer.

Possession of a stolen firearm is not the worst charge in the world. Hopefully, it will not hinder him too much.
