Felon hoping a pardon will help get jobs

Felon hoping a pardon will help get jobs

Dear Mr. Mayo,

I enjoyed the new clip of those 13 in Illinois that have taken the next set with working towards showing society that people can change.  I am in the process of working towards writing a pardon letter to the governor of North Carolina.  For a long time I thought that I was not able to vote cause of my felony and in the last few days that I found out that I'm able to vote even as an ex-felon.  Which made me happy.  But the deli ma that I'm running into regularly is my background for employment.  Even though my Felony is over 16years old I'm still faced with the statement of felon.  I have put it on application no to the ones that have stipulated a year limitation of 5, 7, or 10 years; those that have no limitation  I have to answer yes too.

When I have applied for Government and State jobs even Hospitals and Security jobs. For example I applied to a Security Company in Virginia and I was told by the officer that interview me that if it was up to him it would not matter that I had a felon cause it was 16years ago.  But the company that they were contracting for didn't want any of there candidates to have a record period.  Yet I have not heard anything back from that company for any work at all.  Or when I have applied for a Government contract company CGI they set a formal letter to me stating that due to my background I was not selected.  Even when I
applied for UPS when I was asked that question face to face; I was told by the interview that if it was up to her she would overlook my background but it would be in my best interest to not so willfully give out that information when she herself was only the middle man and someone over her would be the one to make the decision of yes or no.  It makes me feel like my application is just thrown in the trash.   I downloaded your book and the steps were very helpful.  When it came to finding work, which I did but trying to find something better than minimum wage is like a needle in a hay stack.

Currently I will be re-enrolling back in to school online for my Associates Degree in Health Information Technician (Medical Billing and Encoding).  With a degree I think that I would have a better chance as far as the skill the employer could be looking for.  The one thing that hangs over my head is the background check.  I think this Pardon will at least allow me a better chance of being employed with the Government and State level.  With documentation of the Pardon they would at least have to give me a fighting chance.  Which is something that I'm not finding even here in the Washington, DC Maryland area.

I would greatly appreciate any advice that you might have or some suggestions that you could provide to me in the pursuit of my pardon.

This is something new to me and I would like to make sure that I'm taking the right steps in this matter.

Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,

Ms. Tracie

Felon hoping a pardon will help get jobs

Hello Ms. Tracie,

Even though you are pursuing a pardon, don't abandon your job search.  You should stay on your plan.  Bear in mind, no matter how old your conviction is, it will always be visible to the court system, law enforcement and government agencies.  This may the reason you are having trouble obtaining a government opportunity or getting a job with a company with a government contract.

I first suggest contacting your local United Way office.  The United Way supports may social service agencies, some of which assist ex-offenders and felons.  As I stated in my book (From Jail to a Job,) one of the most underutilized resources in many of our communities is the local One-stop Career Center.  The center has resources that can help ex-offenders and felons get jobs.  You can get help preparing a resume, find a list of open positions in your area and even assistance finding and paying for career training.  You can even get information on getting a federal bond that could help you get hired.  There are also counselors that provide one-on-one assistance.  Many counselors have experience working with ex-offenders and felons.

You can find your nearest One-stop Career here:

www.servicelocator.org

The best information that I give all ex-offenders and felons looking for jobs is to apply for every job they are qualified for.

I hope this helps.

Jobs for Felons: Will my Criminal Record Hurt my chances to get Hired?

Jobs for Felons: Will my Criminal Record Hurt my chances to get Hired?

Let me first thank you for the information I received from the website (Jobs for Felons: Incredible List of Companies That Hire Ex-offenders and Felons). Just by reading the details has given me a little more hope I had before finding the page.

On yesterday, I was actually offered a job by Comcast contingent on my drug screen & of course my background check. I have had so much anxiety but my faith has not allowed me to fear so much in the last few days.

My question is, should I even continue with the application? I may have a criminal record but I am certainly not a criminal. So, IF my background will stop me from getting the job, what should I do? Should I try to speak with someone in HR to prove myself worthy?

Desperate for a job,

AJ

Jobs for Felons: Will my Criminal Record Hurt my chances to get Hired?

Hello AJ,

Thank you for your kind words.   You've gotten through the application process, you got an interview and did well on it.  You were offered the job, but it is contingent upon the drug screening and background check.  The only question I have, were you totally honest on the application if asked about having a criminal background?  If you were not honest on the application, the background check will reveal your dishonesty.

I have talked to felons where less than honest when completing the application and were hired, only to be fired later when the background check was done.  They were not fired for having criminal records, they were fired for falsifying the application.  I hope that is not your case.  I advise all of my students to be totally honest on all phases of the employment process.  I know that there is often a temptation to leave certain things off of applications, but honesty is always the best policy.

If after the background check comes back and they decide not to hire you, there is little more you can do.  It's their decision.  At that point, I would just pick myself up and keep applying for jobs.  Finding a job with a criminal record is a game of numbers.  The more jobs you apply for the greater your opportunity of finding an employer who will offer you an opportunity despite your record.

Will educated felons be able to get corporate jobs?

Will educated felons be able to get corporate jobs?

Will educated felons be able to get corporate jobs?

Taking a lawbreaking past out of college applications

Hello,

I am a 25 year old college student currently working on my M.S. in Information and Communication Science. When I was 20 I was convicted of "Accessory to a felony after the fact" in Texas (the crime actually happened just 6 months after turning 18). I have not been in trouble with the law since and finished my 5 year probation with no problems. I am smart, attractive, and one of the only women in my program at school. My advisors keep telling me how easy it will be for me to get a job in computer science as a woman due to the lack of diversity amongst gender in many corporations. I am very fearful that I will not be able to get any job after graduation due to my felony record. I have contacted two lawyers in Texas about expungement but they have told me to quit dreaming and that felony expungements are far and few between in the state of Texas (I live in Michigan now). Is this true? Is there no chance for me to get this off my record ever? I am afraid that I have put all of this money into my education and still will not be able to get a successful job because of a stupid decision I made 7 years ago. What are my options? What is some general advice on this issue? Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,

KN

Will educated felons be able to get corporate jobs?

Hello,

Expungement may not be an option for many ex-offenders and felons looking for jobs, but don not give up.  Layers are going to hate my next suggestion because there are attorneys who make their livings by helping people with the expungement process.  My suggestion is to contact your local legal aid office.  There, you will get valuable advice and you can find out if it is a a viable option for you.  If it is an option, you may be able to get low cost or even free assistance and if it can help your career.

I know of ex-offenders and convicted felons with far worse charges than yours who have gone on to have great careers. Companies hire people with criminal records everyday.  A bit of advice is whenever possible, apply for jobs using your resume and well written cover letters. Often by using this method, the criminal record question may never come up. If the question arises, always be honest while letting the person know the event in your life was an isolated incident and you are fortunate to have put it behind you. Also talk about how hard you have worked to overcome your past.

I'm sure you will make out just fine.  In the meantime, take a look at the article linked here:

Jobs for Ex-offenders and felons: How to Get a Job

Jobs for Ex-offenders and Felons: How to Get a Job

Jobs for Ex-offenders and Felons: How to Get a Job
When ex-offenders and felons are released, the main priority is finding a job.  A lot a people talk about second chances, but the realty is that finding a job is going to be hard.  Hard does not mean impossible.  Hard means it's going to take a lot of hard word work and determination.  Here are some tips that will make finding a job a easier for people who are serious about getting jobs and turning their lives around.

Jobs for Ex-offenders and Felons: How to Get a Job

Jobs for Ex-offenders and felons: Criminal Records

Jobs for Ex-offenders and felons: How to Get a JobThe absolute first thing I tell my students is to get a copy of their criminal records.  Somewhere in the job search the question of having a record is going to come up, either on an application or when a background check is done.  I encourage my students to be totally honest whenever questioned about a criminal background.  To do this, you must know exactly what is on your criminal record.

The easiest way to get an accurate copy or your record is ask your parole or probation officer.  They are in position to get this for you. If you do not have a probation or parole officer, you can get one from the FBI.  The FBI will provide the most accurate criminal background check available.  You can get more information on getting this copy here:

https://www.fbi.gov/services/cjis/identity-history-summary-checks

There is an 18.00 fee for this report, but if you do not have the money an you can prove that you are indigent, you can receive this report for free

Jobs for Ex-offenders and felons: How Ex-offenders and Felons Can Find Jobs

The second suggestion I make to my students is to take a trip to the local One-stop Career Center.  This used to be called the employment office.  Here you will found a long list of services that can help you get a job.  There are computers that you can use to apply for jobs online and put together a resume.  If you do not know how to build a resume, you can get help doing this.  There are interview skill building classes and other classes that can get you ready for a job.  You will find a list of open jobs in you immediate area.  There are also counselors available that can assist you in your job search.  All of these service are free of charge.  You can find the nearest One-stop Career Center at the link below

http://servicelocator.org

Jobs for Ex-offenders and felons: Networking to find Jobs

Perhaps the most powerful method of finding a job is networking.  Networking is simply contacting people you already to find available jobs.  Simply talk to people you know and asking them if they know of any jobs that are open.  This seems too simple, but this is how most people find jobs. Start with your friends, neighbors, church group, elected officials and others you come in contact with frequently.

Jobs for Ex-offenders and felons: Get a Resume

I do not send my students out on a job search without a well written resume. A resume is a way to combine your skills, education, education and training in a neat package.  A resume can sell you even when you are not around.  If you do not have a good resume, I suggest you get help putting one together.  As I noted above, you can get free assistance with your next resume at you local One-stop Career center.

After you get a resume, keep plenty with you wherever you go.  You never know who you are going to meet.  Always be prepared.

Jobs for Ex-offenders and felons: Get Dressed to Find a Job

Anyone looking for a job, not just ex-offenders and felons, should understand the power of making a great impression.  Nothing does this better than a nice outfit, clean shoes and nice hairstyle.  All of this should add up to an appearance that looks professional.  Your look should say, "I am the person for this Job."  Felons get hired everyday.  They stand a better chance of getting the jobs they want when they look like they are worthy of the job.  Employer want to feel like they re hiring quality people.

Men should wear a dark suit or sports jacket with a light colored shirt and a color coordinated tie.  You always wear a pair of shoes that could be and should be shined.  Never ever wear boots or sneakers to an interview. If you do not have a suit definitely wear  light shirt.  Make sure your clothes are cleaned and pressed.

If you shave, make sure you are cleanly shaven.   If you wear a beard or mustache, make sure it is neat and trimmed.

The best look for women is a suit with a knee-length skirt or pants and a light colored blouse.  Be sure to to wear natural looking pantyhose.  The best shoes are neat looking pumps with heels that are not too high.    Make up should not be heavy and avoid bright colored or black nail polish.  Keep jewelry to a minimum.  One necklace, one ring, one bracelet per wrist and earrings no larger than a quarter.

Shower on the day of the interview.  Just use a fresh smelling soap.  Avoid cologne or oils.  You don't want to chance a negative reaction.    Do not eat or smoke before your interview.  Be sure to brush your teeth.  Your breath should be fresh and your teeth clean.

Do your absolute best to look like a professional on your interview.  Looking like a professional will show respect four yourself, the interviewer and the opportunity to interview.

Practice Interviewing

The best thing you can do prepare for an interview is to practice.  Practice your body language and posture.  Anticipate the questions that the interviewer might ask and come up with good answers to those questions.  Practice answering the questions but do not memorize them.  Practice them until they sound natural.  Get someone to pose as the interviewer and record your practice interviews.

Always us appropriate language when interviewing and never use slang.  Listen carefully and be sure to answer every question completely but do not talk too much.  Be prepared to talk about your criminal record but don't focus on it.  Instead, focus on what you have done to improve yourself.

Nothing takes the place of preparation.  Practice until you feel confident and you will do well.

Oregon company makes a point of hiring ex-convicts

Oregon company makes a point of hiring ex-convicts
About one in three of the more than 300 employees at Oregon-based Dave's Killer Bread has a criminal background.  -
By
A major effort is under way in this country to reform the way we sentence drug criminals. Thousands of felons are getting early release according to the U.S. Sentencing Commission,  and that will continue for years to come.
The question is, will there be jobs for them?
If you visit the bakery at Dave's Killer Bread outside Portland, you'll find pumps sucking two-thousand pounds of ingredients into mixing bowls.  You'll also find that a third of the company's 300 employees have a criminal past, including plant manager Ronnie Elrod.
“We're just so happy to have a job that typically we've got an attitude of gratitude rather than a sense of entitlement.  And we also know that opportunities are going to be hard to come by for us so we have to take those opportunities that come along and we really have to make good on them,” Elrod said.
And Harvard sociologist Devah Pager believes that's true.  She is studying the job performance of ex-cons in the military. “Those with serious criminal pasts perform just as well if not better than their counterparts with no criminal records.  At least with appropriate kinds of screening, individuals with serious criminal records can perform very well in the workplace,” she said.
Another of Pager's studies  shows that a criminal record seriously reduces the chances of getting a job. “I hired groups of young men to pose as job applicants and sent them all over the city applying for jobs and half the time they reported having a felony conviction and simply by checking that box, their chances of  receiving a call-back or job offer were cut in half,” Pager said.
Dave's Killer Bread has hired so many ex-convicts because, well because of Dave...Dave Dahl, that is. After serving 15 years for drug crimes, Dahl returned to his family's bakery and in 2005 created his namesake bread. “It was based on the epiphany I had in prison which was that I could turn my own life around and eventually the feeling was that we could help others to do the same thing if they were willing to do most of the work themselves,” Dahl said.
The company uses its hiring practices as a selling point, with Dahl's picture on every package, even though a judge put him on conditional release after he rammed into some police cars two years ago.
This year Dave's Killer Bread was sold to Flowers Foods for $275 million.

Felon may need legal help to get a job

Felons Wanting to Start Over Struggle to Re-Enter Society
I am currently seeking my Bachelors and soon to be my Masters in the Field of Psychology. I was hoping to become a Clinical Psychologist however I was wondering if there are any laws that prohibit a felon that was convicted of a Violent crime (Vehicular Homicide Disregard to the safety of others) from working in this field. If I can not do Clinical Psychology is there a possibility in the Research side of Psychology. I am currently living out of the country but hope to be moving back with my husband as I begin my masters in 2011. I know that Medical field is generally out for violent criminals but it has been 7 years since I was convicted and 5 years since I finished all my Probation and jail time. Do I have any hope of finding a position in Clinical Psychology in the United States or should I focus on Research Psychology...?

Felon may need legal help to get a job

Hello,

Obtaining a job in your field depends on whether you can be licensed or certified. I suggest you contact the licensing board in your state to see if your conviction will be an obstacle.

Felon may need legal help to get a job
Often ex-offenders and felons need a little legal assistance in their search for jobs. I have had students with Vehicular Homicide convictions downgraded to Aggravated Assault which is a lot easier to work with. Contact an attorney to see if this is an option in your state.

I hope this helps.

Mom of a felon wants to help him get a job

Mom of a felon wants to help him get a job

Back to Jail: Addiction, mental illness,

joblessness pave path back to prison

Hi my son was charged with 5 counts of grand theft.  He happened to have drug problems.  He went through a court options program and completed.  I am in process of getting charges expunged.   In the meantime can't get job.  All places check records. He is 22 and now is very sad we put him in rehab and is drug free for 7 months now don't want this to head him back to drugs! Any suggestions?

Mom of a felon wants to help him get a job

Your son should be proud that he has the kind of family who is strong enough to exhibit the type of tough love that he needs. Many of the felons and ex-offenders I deal with do not have that type of support.

In relation to his convictions, five counts of grand theft is not the worst case I've had to deal with. He probably will not have a chance at jobs that any kind of valuables will be at risk. I suggest he try getting a job through a temporary agency. Temporary agencies are a great way to quickly get back into the working world. Many employers use agencies to try out new employees before hiring them. Good workers are hard to find. If an employer sees that he is hard working, punctual and fit in well, he may offer the job permanently. Some other advantages to using a temporary employment service:

Mom of a felon want to help him get a job
He can try different types of work and develop new skills which can be used later.

He can make new contacts.

Build a work history.

Earn a wage until you can find permanent employment.

He probably will have better success looking for small independent agencies that have fewer hiring restrictions than larger national companies and are free to hire anyone they choose. He will be able to get a list of these agencies in your local phone directory.

He can also go to your local One-Stop Career Center.   Each state has a network of centers that offer a variety of free services that can get him ready for work and assist him in finding employment. In addition, these centers offer training programs that may prepare him for a career.

Some services available are:

Career planning and counseling (often counselors have experience in assisting ex-offenders and felons)

Resume Writing, Interviewing Skills

Computers with internet access and word processing

Daily access to thousands of job listings Job postings and referrals Printers, fax machines, phones, and copiers for job search use

Second chances benefit everyone

Hello,

I was reading your blog about jobs for ex felons and was curious if you could provide some information. A little information about my history, in April 1982 I was charged with a 1st degree felony charge of aggravated burglary and was told to plead guilty by a court appointed attorney even though I wanted to plead not guilty he said I would be punished for taking it to trial and the judge agreed to probation so I plead guilty and was sentenced to a term of 2 - 15 in Ohio State Reformatory. Well I spent 9 months there and my family got another attorney and he got it reduced to a felony 2 and I was released. I only spent a year on Parole and was released on good behavior so that is 1 felony against me.

I can get a job almost anywhere but I cannot keep it because of the 911 terrorist attacks. everyone now does background checks and asks if you have ever been convicted of a felony
which should not be allowed. Since then I was terminated from a job for no reason and have been charged with unauthorized use of property and it is pending felony 5 but the judge agreed to probation and this happened all because I helped the HR manager with her email and the company found out I did this after I was terminated so they called the FBI and that is how I was charged.

I have a bachelor of science in health administration and an extensive background in information technology but there is no way I will ever work legally again. Any advice or know any companies who hire felons? I am working with state senators to get the expungement laws changed in Ohio but this could take years and the money I have saved up I have been living on is all but gone so I need a job.

Thanks

Rick

That's quite a story. My suggestion to you is to only apply for jobs with cover letters and resumes. Often when ex-offenders and felons apply this way, the question about criminal background never comes up. If it ever does, be honest. Don't focus on your past.  Shift the attention to the things you have done since your mistakes onto what you have done to improve yourself.  Check out the videos below.  It may give a few ideas that could lead to a felon getting a job.

Locked Up, Then Locked Out
My son is 20 and he made a bad choice by hanging out with the wrong crowd and was arrested for possession of a stolen firearm, did a couple of days in jail for ignoring house arrest one day for not coming home on time. My husband has been offered a transfer to Europe and my son's probation is for 5 years.

Is my son allowed to leave the state to go with us to Europe and seek employment there, should this be brought up to his P.O.

Also, will he be able to find a job in Minnesota in the meantime until our move which is at the end of this year? Any suggestions on job searching would be greatly appreciated.

Hoping you can help me, he's our son and I love him so much and want only the best for him.

Thanks for listening

Desperate Loving Mom

Mom wants to help felon get a job

Hello Mom,

Felons with probation usually have to finish the terms of probation before they can leave the state. I am guessing that he will be in violation of his probation if he leaves before it is finished. To be sure, contact his probation officer.

Possession of a stolen firearm is not the worst charge in the world. Hopefully, it will not hinder him too much.

He can get help on his job search at the nearest One-stop Career center. You can the center nearest you at this link:

CBIA Session Promotes Hiring Ex-Offenders

My friend has been out of prison for over 15 years and is losing hope of finding substantial work help maintain his home. Does this Act really work or is this another G. W. Bush "Smoke Screen".

Will "Second Chance" help felons get jobs?

I always tell ex-offenders and felons looking for jobs to depend on their will to work hard. It would be foolish to wait for any program or legislation to solve a problem for you. With or without social programs, felons can only hope to get jobs by making themselves employable enough to compete for jobs on the open market.  This will take a definite plan of action that includes a well written resume, job search and interview skills to start.  It will take hours of hard work.

He can get a head start on his job search by making a visit to the local One-stop Career Center.  This should be the first stop for anyone looking for jobs especially those with criminal records.  He will find a number of valuable services that could get him ready to compete for jobs.  He may also find opportunities for training that could mean a new career.  You can find the closest One-stop Career Center as well as all of the available services here:

Trucking Jobs May be Perfect for Ex-offenders and Felons

Trucking Jobs May be Perfect for Ex-offenders and Felons

Piedmont trucking company

I got out Feb. '16 and went and talked to my old boss. I worked for a paving company and it was the the wrong time of year to put me on so I started to draw unemployment and thinking about how to get out of doing labor work. I paved for 2 yrs but I'm a 17 yr journeyman roofer that's another part maybe will talk about that later. The long and short is I have my CDL (Commercial Driver License) with all my endorsements. If I can just get a shot who ever I work for will love me. I've never been fired and have good references but they won't even talk to me can you help me my school sure ain't. I really want to long haul but ain't choosy. I'm 48. The kids are grown and the ex is gone. It's perfect for me. I've always wanted to see the states. Please help if you can or point me in the right direction. I think I've applied on most of the sights.

Trucking Jobs May be Perfect for Ex-offenders and Felons

Hello Glen,

Your situation may be perfect for a trucking career. Often I meet ex-offenders and felons who have opted for driving jobs.

Here is a page with a good list of trucking companies. A large number of them hire ex-offenders and felons. There are even notations regarding their hiring policies.

Each trucking company makes its own rules regarding felony convictions. Some will employ a driver after 5 years or longer since the conviction. Other companies won't hire felons, regardless. You just need to get on the phone and start contacting carriers.

Without experience you are somewhat limited as to will hire you. Having the felony conviction reduces your pool of companies further. The best thing you can do is make some phone calls.

Best of luck to you.
