no more likely to be fired than other employees

Dear sir:

I don't know who to turn to anymore with my questions. I was convicted in embezzlement and fraud in 2008 in County of Sacramento, CA. I am currently on probation. I finish my FURLOUGH through the city of Sac, Sheriffs Dept in May 2008. I am still currently doing IHSS services for my parents because I couldn't find a job to do WORK furlough program, so my brother just got a job with the State of CA and told to take over them. Thanks to our Gov. Soon, the IHSS program have to go through fingerprint. So, I will loose it soon.

I know what I did wrong and my consequences. I didn't want my four kids to stay on the street so I did it. I am change now. I recently graduated in Medical Assistant and REALLY SEARCHING for a job so help me pay my bills and fines. I feel like giving up. Seems like I can't FIND a job anywhere. I think about everyday what it will be like if I didn't comment embezzlement and fraud. Please, give me advice to help me find a job in the Sacramento, CA region. I loosing hope. :(

Dear Believer,

Embezzlement is a serious conviction and it is going to take some out-of-the-box thinking. First of all I would suggest checking with medical the licensing board in your state to inquire if you are eligible to be licensed. Often ex-offenders and felons have difficulty obtaining certain types of jobs. You can get info here:

If you can, I would then suggest you do a bit of networking. Contact every elected official in your voting district and enlist their help in assisting you. They all have staffs that respond to inquiries made by citizens in their respective districts. Also contact the judge who sentenced you. In a letter I would express remorse regarding you past choices and what you have done to overcome your mistakes. Never ask for jobs, always ask for advice. This works especially well in election years.  You would be surprised at the type of responses you will receive, and you will receive responses. Ex-offender and felon job searches will be difficult but hard work and determination will pay off

Five Bottom Line Reasons Why Employers Should Hire Ex-Felons

One of the things felons can do to ensure job search success is knowing where where to apply. Many nation-wide companies have been known to hire felons. Ex-offender and felon jobs will be easier to get when one knows where to look.  There are jobs for felons and many employers will hire people with criminal records as long as their crimes were not violent, theft related or sex offenses.

There are a number of options open to ex-offenders and felons when it comes to where to find leads for jobs.  For example, if you are a tradesman, you could look in the yellow pages and call independent contractors to inquire if they are looking for qualified help.  If you are a cook, you may want to call restaurants, catering companies and hotels to inquire about available positions.  Large retailers and supermarkets often have stock and warehouse jobs available for hard working individuals.  You may have greater success applying to smaller local companies than large companies.  Your record may be less of an issue to a smaller company that has the power to hire anyone it wants.

Temporary agencies are still another great option.  Temp agencies are a good way for ex-offenders and felons to get work quickly.  Many temporary employees are hire permanently if they prove to be hardworking.  Once again, you will probably have greater success applying at smaller independent agencies rather that large, nation-wide agencies.  The larger companies may have policies that forbid the hiring of people with criminal records.  Make a list of temporary agencies in your local area and start applying just like you would any other job.

Federal Bonding Program helps felons get jobs

Promoting Opportunity

Employers might have concerns about certain job applicants and perhaps hesitant to hire them because they have criminal records, little or no work backgrounds or recovering alcohol or drug addicts. Some employers are reluctant to hire ex-offenders or felons because they feel their backgrounds make them more probable to steal, commit fraud or be dishonorable in other ways. Many felons are not able to be bonded. A bond is an insurance policy issued by an agency that protects an employer against money or property loss due to employee dishonesty. Certain criminal convictions make many felons unqualified for private bonding. Felons, including anyone with a record of arrest, conviction or imprisonment, and anyone who has ever been on probation or parole, are considered "at-risk" job applicants.

Federal Bonding Program is sponsored by the Department of Labor. Bonds are issued for those who are unable to be bonded privately. The bonds are issued at no cost to the employer and could be an incentive to hire an applicant. Criminal records become less of a concern to employers if they are assured that they are protected from loss of money or property due to theft.

Bond issuance applies to any job at any employer in any state, and covers any employee dishonesty committed on or away from the employer’s actual job location. Any full or part-time employee paid wages (with Federal taxes automatically withheld) can be bonded, including persons hired by temporary employment agencies. Unfortunately, self-employed persons cannot be covered by these Fidelity Bonds. Fidelity bonds can help felons get jobs and can also be issued to cover already employed workers who need bonding to prevent being laid off or to secure transfer or promotion to a different job at their company.

An applicant can be bonded the same day the job offer is made.

Besides Jobs, What Do Ex-offenders and Felons Need?

I use this blog to answer questions from ex-offenders and felons looking for jobs. From time to time, I come across some things from others that I feel should be shared. This comes from a human services student, Roger P., who would like to know directly from those in need what is needed.

I am human services student, currently working on certification as an alcohol and drug counselor. I have been doing research for a class on the topic of criminality. My first instinct was to explain what criminal thinking is and how it is changed. However, my research has led me in a different direction. I have decided to concentrate on the lack of resources, myths rubber-stamped by society, and postulating an awareness of these struggles that continue the cycle to recidivism.

I'm asking you, to help me understand, how I can help you and others, who wear that rubber-stamp (CONVICTED FELON), to live productive, meaningful, and happy lives. The only person who truly understands what it is to be oppressed is the oppressed person. I have been helping ex-offenders and felons get jobs for many years and if there is one thing I stress is the power of the first impression.  How you look is going to speak volumes about you before you ever open your mouth.  Whether out looking for a job, filling out applications or interviewing that first impression is powerful.  What do people see when they see you?  Do they see a thug or a businessperson?  Everything about you should "Professional."

The classic look for men is a dark suit with a light colored shirt and a color coordinated tie.  At the very least, dark slacks, with a light colored shirt and a nice silk tie.  Don't forget the shined shoes.  For women, a classic  pant or skirt suit with coordinated pumps. 

I meet ex-offenders and felons who tell me that they do not have the money to buy the kind of clothes that I'm talking about.  There is a solution, the local thrift store.  I know what you are thinking- used clothes,
yuck!  Get rid of you prejudices that thrift stores are full of junk that other people threw away.  The fact is, thrift stores often have high quality clothes at bargain basement prices.  Check this true story about an actual student of mine:

I recently took a student of mine to a local thrift store because he told me he did not have clothes for an upcoming interview.  This is what we got.


1 pair of  Perry Ellis Portfolio double pleated, cuffed slacks - $4.00

1 Ralph Lauren Dress shirt - $3.00

1 Nautica silk tie - $2.00

1 pair of Cole Haan shoes $12.00

He went home with clothes that would make him look like a million dollars for $21.00!

Need Interview Clothes? Ex offenders and Felons Should try Thrift Stores

Thrift stores are great for finding good bargains on clothes. Here are some tips to make thrift store shopping a great experience.

 Give yourself time.  Thrift stores usually have a lot of things to look through.  Take your time and find what you need.

Go with a friend.  It’s good to have a second opinion. If you're a guy, go with a girl.  If you're a girl, vice versa.  Your friend will be able to help you decide if something really looks good on you.

Find out if there are any sales.  Some thrift stores color code the sale items.  Some stores even have a sale day.  Find out how to make your thrift store bargains even better.

If possible, buy clothes that are machine washable.  What good is getting a good deal on slacks if you can only dry clean them.

Look clothes over very carefully.  Nothing is worse than thinking you have found a nice shirt, only to get home and find a hole on the back or the cuffs are frayed.

Try clothes on.  You will feel really bad if you got those great slacks home and they don't fit

Wash clothes when you get home.  Thrift store clothes are basically clean, but many have been on the rack for a while and need to be freshened up before wearing.

Thrift stores are a great option for ex-offenders and felons who want to look professional but do not have a lot of money.  To find your local thrift store, check your local telephone book.  Even if you haven't decided that thrift stores are for you.  Try one anyway.  Go down and look around.  Even if you don't buy anything the first time, don't be surprised if you go back at another time.

Hello Eric,

First and foremost, I want to thank you for taking your time to both run your very informational blog as well as to view my e-mail. Secondly, I apologize in advance for the multiple questions that I am asking. Now, for some insight...I met my boyfriend two years ago, just before he was going to jail in MD for a violation of probation. He also confided in me from the start that he was facing seven felony charges in PA. Caring deeply for him, I agreed that so long as he was a changed man and did not participate in the activity that landed him in trouble in the first place from there on out, that I would stay with him. I waited for him while he served his violation of probation sentence, and ever since a little over a year ago, we have been in a serious, committed relationship. He has been sober ever since we met...and you can ask anyone, his friends, family, teachers, old co-workers...he has certainly changed, for the better.

Of course, our lives together have been a roller coaster. His charges from PA loomed for the first nine or so months of our relationship. Every court date, I did not know if he was returning to jail, and if I would be left waiting again. In the meantime, he did everything that he needed to. He voluntarily participated in rehab, did volunteer work at a local non-profit organization, and stayed sober. When his sentencing date came around, the judge recognized all of his hard work and let him off with six years of probation instead of the two years in jail that he had agreed to in the plea agreement. Even his lawyer was shocked, and shook his head when my boyfriend thanked him, before saying, "I did nothing. You did all of the work." The downside was that he officially became a convicted felon, instead of having pending felonies. Thankfully, they were dropped from seven to three.

This was very exciting news, of course. Even more so exciting was that a couple of hours after we got home, he received a phone call for an interview. By the next week, he already had a part-time job. He held the job for a month without any problems until recently. Despite being a very hard worker and increasing sales by $5,000 single-handedly in the short amount of time that he worked there, corporate obtained his background check and the store let him go. This was very frustrating, especially seeing as when he was hired, his managers knew every single little thing on his record. He was never dishonest about anything. The local store wanted him, but corporate did not.

This leaves us in a pickle. We have bills to pay, bills that I cannot afford on my own. We realize how much of a struggle it was for the first nine months for him to even get an interview, and here he is, back at square one. Everything feels like it happened so quickly - he was given a second chance, and it was ripped away from him just as fast. He has a strong resume that we have sent to numerous employers, but he obviously cannot pass a background check. Even local laboring agencies will not accept people with so much as a misdemeanor, since they are specifically for "individuals with clean records who just cannot find jobs," as he was told on the phone. He is getting pretty discouraged...I can provide emotional support, no problem, but financially, I cannot hold us both up for too long. What would your best suggestion be? Should he even mention this latest job on his resume? He was a great worker - they just did not want him after the background check. How is he supposed to explain working for simply a month to the next person who offers him an interview?

To add to his woes and dreams getting crushed, he wants so desperately to join the Army...unfortunately, every recruiter that we have talked to laughs in his face and turns him away. One of our best friends is a Sgt. MP and he keeps giving my boyfriend hope, though that goes away when the actual recruiters say there is no chance. Considering that my boyfriend was represented by a public defender in his court case involving the felony charges, what course of action can we take? I have seen on your blog the mentioning of sending letters to lessen felonies to misdemeanors, etc to help with this problem. It is just very confusing when his public defender says that he has to wait seven years to have his felonies expunged before he can join the Army, the judge says he only needs to finish probation to join the Army, and the recruiters say no matter how old a charge is, he can never join the Army.

Being with this man whom I care so deeply for and yet feel like I can't help is a very overwhelming feeling. I have such a strong passion now to organize and rally, to contact my local government to encourage them to encourage employers to hold ex-offender friendly job fairs, etc. not just for my boyfriend, but for all reformed convicts who truly do want to change their lives. How would I go about doing that? Would a letter suffice? Who would I even write to in our local government? I want to advocate to help others get the second chances that they deserve, I just feel as though I need a bit of direction or encouragement to get me going.

Your boyfriend is lucky to have someone like you in his corner. Many ex-offenders and felons usually don't have as much support. As for listing such a short term job, I would not. It would simply raise more questions. I would apply at smaller companies that can hire at their own discretion. Your boyfriend may also consider temporary employment. Once again he may have success applying at small independent employment agencies who are free to hire anyone they please rather than national companies that have stiffer corporate hiring guidelines. Another option is contact your local United Way. The United Way financially supports social service agencies including some which help ex-offenders or may even employ them. Goodwill Industries also have programs which help and employ ex-offenders and felons.

Expungement is not an option when seeking to join the military. Expungement does not erase convictions. It makes them unavailable for view from the public. They will always be visible to law enforcement, the court system and government agencies. The Army will grant waivers for those convicted of certain felonies allowing them to join. If the recruiter tell you that you are ineligible, then you are.

In these tough economic times, there are so many unemployed people who do not have criminal backgrounds making jobs for ex-offenders and felons even more difficult. An out-of-the-box approach may be to contact elected officials in your area and ask for help. He can express his desire to be employed and once again become a productive member of society. Elected officials have staff members that answer letters and respond to inquiries from citizens. Officials that could offer assistance are: Mayors, Council Members, Commissioners, Aldermen, Board Members, Assemblymen, and Judges. Never ask for jobs, only suggestions. He may be surprised how well this works.

I agree it is really hard for a felon.  One thing I suggest is that take anything you can get so you can build a resume, a work history and a  reference for you to build on.  Apply for as many jobs as you can because find a job for a felon is a numbers game.  The more jobs you apply for, the greater number of interviews you will get.  The more interviews you get the greater your chances will be to get a job.  Take a look at this story which is an actual case of one of my students, Real Stories of Ex-offenders and Felons Looking for Job.  It tells the story of one of my students who was having a tough time finding a job and some of the things he had to do to get hired.

From time to time, we all need a little help.  I know there was an organization in in Ft. Lauderdale that may help ex-offenders and felons get jobs.  The Urban League of Broward County has a program that helps to prepare low income, unemployed and those with criminal backgrounds for jobs.  There are other resources that can help families and single people who are having a difficult time.  You can find out more about The Urban League of Broward County and what programs are available at their website.  Under that, is one of my videos that will give you other options that may lead to you getting a job.

Surely you can pursue a paralegal degree. The question is will you be allowed to practice in the state of California. Contact the school where the program you want is offered. Career schools usually have job placement departments that assist their graduates in finding employment.  The school will be able to tell you based on your conviction if you will be eligible to be licensed.

My brother just got out of jail after serving for 8 months for marriage fraud, he is an honorably discharged veteran of Afghanistan war and is planning to go to school now under 9/11 GI Bill program.

I was wondering if you could help and tell us where to find the info about what jobs are restricted for felons and most important what licenses they absolutely can't obtain here in NYC.

For example real estate salesperson license, or physical trainer, or any securities licensees, like Series 7 and etc....

A: Hello Anna,

I don't know how serious Marriage Fraud is.  I'm not sure if is a felony in the state of New York or how it is viewed by employers.  There is no list per se but certain jobs may require licensing or certifications that may be restricted to ex-offenders and felons based on their individual convictions. Your brother would have to contact each entity separately to find if he is eligible to be licensed or certified. Here is a list of occupations that require licensing in the state of New York and application information.

I've applied to over 45 different places and its always "Sorry but our insurance won't allow us to hire an ex-offender," or simply no response at all! I'm sorry you are having so much trouble. My first suggestion to every felon I meet is to contact your local One-stop Career Center. Each state has a network of centers that offer a variety of free services that can get you ready for work and assist you in finding employment. In addition, these centers offer training programs that may prepare you for a career. Some services available are:


Career planning and counseling

Workshops (Resume Writing, Interviewing Skills, and related topics.)

Computers with internet access and word processing

Daily access to thousands of job listings

Job-related magazines and local newspapers

Job postings and referrals

Printers, fax machines, phones, and copiers for job search use

The One-Stop Career Center in Hudson County is located at 438 Summit Avenue, 2nd Floor
Jersey City, NJ . Many of the counselors have experience working with ex-offenders and felons.

Secondly it is possible that the place where you applied has a policy of not hiring ex-offenders or felons? That may simply be the policy of that one organization.

I suggest you contact the school where you were trained and speak to someone in their placement department. They often have contacts that hire their graduates. Often they know the hiring practices of the organizations they work with.  Another suggestion I have for ex-offenders and felons who have medical training, is to apply to temporary employment.  Often permanent jobs are found by those who start as temporary employees.  There are also temporary employment agencies that serve the medical field.

I also suggest going to the One-stop career center in your area. They have counselors who can assist you in finding a job. There will be other services that could be helpful to you such as employment leads from the state job bank, resume writing assistance and other helpful services. Often the counselors are experienced in finding jobs for felons and ex-offenders. You can find your local One-stop career center here:

Hello my name is Sharon, I'm from Raleigh NC, I have a worthless check (which I paid off in 12/2004), I have an assault charge, (which it was dismissed on 11/2009 and I was found not guilty of the charge.) I'm a single mother of 3 and I haven't worked since 9/2008. You should consult a qualified professional that is experienced in this field to see if this is a viable option for you. Your local legal office may offer free or low cost legal services that can help with this process. The office may also have relationships with employers who are willing to hire ex-offenders.
