Felon hopes expungement will help job search

Felon hopes expungement will help job search

Felon hopes expungement will help job search
Hello, my name is Stacie and back in 2002 I was convicted of Felony Theft (long story short, I was with my abusive ex and I took the blame for it) Thank God I was eventually able to move & get far away from him before he could kill me. I was recently approved for an expungement. I also received the paper work from the attorney general office stating that "this section has initiated the necessary action to remove the information from the files of the Indentification Divison, Federal Bureau of Investigation." I'm kinda confused when it comes to expungements. Am I able to join the military or work as a civilian on a military base? I just wanted to make sure it wouldn't come up on a background check since I'd be working for the government. I would more than APPRECIATE it if You could answer this question for me because I'm a single mom trying to find a good job so I can provide for my child.

Hello Stacie,

Generally speaking, expunged records are not simply erased. They will usually be visible to the court system, law enforcement and government agencies. I am going to say it will show up on a government background check. Of course this is not legal advice.  You should speak to a qualified professional who has experience in this area for a greater understanding of expungement as it relates to the statutes in your state.  I suggest contacting you local legal aid office.  As for joining the military, there are ex-offenders and felons accepted into the military everyday. The Army seems to be the most accepting branch for ex-offenders and felons.  Contact you nearest Army recruiter.  That person will certainly look into your eligibility.

In the meantime, take a look at the video below.  Hopefully it will give you some ideas about how to to get some leads for jobs.

Man with dropped charges wants to have record expunged in Florida

Man with dropped charges wants to have record expunged in Florida

Man with dropped charges wants to have record expunged in FloridaI live in Florida. In 2004 I was charged with a felony which resulted in a withhold of adjudication. I believe this case was sealed? In 2009 I was charged with another felony but this charge was dropped and shows as a Nolle Pross. Is there any way to have this second case removed from my record?

Thank you for your advice,

Brian

Man with dropped charges wants to have record expunged in Florida

Hello Brian,

Man with dropped charges wants to have record expunged in Florida
The only way to find out if the charge was sealed is to get a copy of your criminal history. You may want to get that anyway to be totally certain of your legal status when applying for jobs.  Bear in mind that even if your charge is expunged or sealed, it will always be visible to the court system, law enforcement and government entities.

You can apply for sealing or expungement in Florida under certain conditions. You can get more information here:

http://www.fdle.state.fl.us/content/getdoc/c83dd888-ef7a-448e-9a96-ba69fc4181f7/Seal-and-Expunge-Home.aspx

This site offers instruction about how to get this done, but I wouldn't try a legal process like expungement like this by myself. Often ex-offender and felon job searches require a little legal assistance.  Attorneys may get upset at what I'm about to tell you because they make a lot of money doing the very same thing you may be able to do for little or no money.  My suggestion is to contact your local legal aid office for assistance.    They have attorneys that may assist you at little or no cost. They may also be able to get a copy of your criminal record.  Check your local telephone directory or the Florida Bar association to find out how to find the legal aid office in your area.

Felon mom in Fl needs a job

Felon mom in Fl needs a job

Felon mom in Fl needs a job
Hello,

I came across the blog about "How Felons can get jobs"; I hope maybe you can give me some advice. I am a 35 yr old single mother of 3 from Polk County, Fl. When I was younger (my teen yrs into adulthood) up until I was 23, I rebelled. I always had a bad temper and I was the know it all who wore my heart on my sleeve. When someone attacked me, I would attack back in which I earned myself 1 night in jail and 3-4, misdemeanors (not at the same time).

After having my children, I grew up and gained control of myself. I have stayed out of trouble for 10 yrs now but I am having an awful time gaining employment. I have a security clearance approved by the government but still most companies will not hire me. I have been recently laid off in security due to the economy. I spend everyday applying for jobs, sending out my resume and going on interviews. During the interviews employers love my credentials, my skills and want to hire me right away, but once I mention my past or the background comes back, they shut the door in my face. I have applied to big and small companies, temp work and even fast food. I get the same with all. I have NO felonies and the misdemeanors I have were never committed again. I have proven that I have learned from my past. I've put in the education, so what else can I do to get past my past? Thanks for reading and have a blessed weekend.

Best Wishes, K

Felon mom in Fl needs a jobHello K,

I'm sorry you are having so much trouble.
Frequent readers of this blog are familiar with my next suggestion. I encourage all ex-offenders and felons looking for jobs to visit their local One-stop Career Center. One-stop Career Centers are very underutilized resources that ex-offenders and felons can use not only to get jobs, but to get career counseling and training. In addition, these centers provide a long list of valuable services. There are 24 Regional Workforce Boards in Florida which are responsible for implementing the employment programs in their regions. Services available include referrals to employment, career counseling, assistance with job search and placement, access to computers/internet, resume preparation, phone/fax machines, copy machines, interest, aptitude and basic skills testing and other special programs tailored to meet employment needs of those facing barriers to employment.

Each center has trained counselors that provide one-on-one assistance. Many of them have experience assisting ex-offenders and felons looking for jobs. The counselors can also assist you with with the Federal Bonding Program. Ex-offenders and felons looking for jobs can be bonded through a program offered by the federal government. It would make it easier for those with criminal records to get hired if employers are insured against theft or fraud.

You can find more about the Federal Bonding Program here:

Felon in NC may use Expungement to get Jobs

Hello Sharon,

Often the ex-offender or felon job search will include some legal assistance. Since your crime is non-violent, you may be eligible to apply for expungement. Expungement would hide the conviction from public view meaning that if it is granted, it would only be visible to the court system, law enforcement and the court system.
